Cinco de Mayo is one of my favorite occasions. What's not to love? Chips! Guacamole! Margaritas! Sombreros! It's an instant party.
Thankfully, there are a ton of great restaurants and bars that get into the Cinco de Drinko spirit every year. Here are my top picks for where to celebrate.
BOSTON
1. Bandita in Brighton - Bandita is hidden in the basement of Article 24, Brighton's newest bar and trivia hot spot. Bandita's queso is ridiculously addicting, and the potato quesadilla is not to be missed. Trust me.
2. Besito in Chestnut Hill - Besito provides an upscale take on Mexican classics. Enjoy sangria by the pitcher, tableside guacamole and a fantastic chile relleno.
3. Lone Star Taco Bar in Allston and Cambridge - I have eaten a lot of street corn over the past few years and no one's version is as tasty as Lone Star's. Get the corn, a few tacos and a Paloma (blanco tequila, grapefruit, lime and salt).
4. The Painted Burro in Somerville - This has become my favorite place for brunch in all of Greater Boston (which you may have noticed from my constant Instagram photos). The Cinco scene at Painted Burro is always lively. Be prepared to wait in line.
5. Rosa Mexicano in the Seaport - I have spent many a Cinco at Rosa and it's always a blast. Is there anything better than watching this guacamole cart roll toward your table?
If you've already been to these five spots, here are few more to consider:
- Cactus Club in Back Bay
- Cafe Sol Azteca in Newton Centre
- Lolita on Newbury Street
- Papagayo in Somerville or South Boston
- Rudy's in Somerville
- Tico in Back Bay
- Zocalo in Back Bay
LAS VEGAS
1. China Poblano in The Cosmopolitan - There is only one place on the Las Vegas strip that will do Cinco de Mayo justice and that is China Poblano. The José Andrés restaurant has an extensive drink menu, offers tableside guacamole and 11 kinds of tacos.
NEW YORK
1. Dos Caminos (multiple locations) - Anywhere that's good enough for Bethenny Frankel is good enough for me! Bethenny was seen pre-gaming at the Dos Caminos in the Meatpacking district before going to Carole's election night party.
2. Mercadito on the Lower East Side - I went to this spot for a bachelorette party and the girls raved about the steak tacos. It's good to get a solid food base going before you order rounds and rounds of margs.
3. Mexican Radio in Soho - The decor in this restaurant will get you in the Cinco spirit right away! Go for the sangria (by the pitcher) and the enchiladas.
4. Salvation Taco in Murray Hill - The paper lanterns and twinkle lights inside the dining room will have you feeling transported to an outdoor patio in Mexico. If you can get up there, Salvation Taco has an epic roof deck on 17th floor. Be sure to save room for dessert, their churros and their ice cream selection is on point.
5. Tortaria in Union Square - Brave a line full of NYU students to order the crispy eggplant torta. If I lived in NYC I would be at this place every week!
SAN FRANCISCO
1. Colibri in Union Square - Don't be fooled by its tourist trap location, Colibri on Geary Street off of Union Square serves authentic, delicious, Mexican cuisine. It's the only SF restaurant I make sure to visit on every single trip. To add a little spectacle to your meal, order the Macho Margarita. Hint: it involves fire.
