I am a huge Andy Cohen fan. Not just because he is the production mastermind behind The Real Housewives franchise, but because we are both celebrity-obsessed, ruled by the current mood of our dogs and have very, how shall I say this. . . vocal, Jewish mothers.
In January 2015 I read Andy's first book, Most Talkative. It chronicles his childhood in St. Louis, his time at Boston University (he worked at a souvenir cart in Faneuil Hall), how he rose through the ranks at CBS News and his eventual move to Bravo TV. That same year I also read his second book, The Andy Cohen Diaries. Unlike Most Talkative, the Diaries are less introspection and more gossip.
When I learned there would be a second installment of the Diaries, I almost pre-ordered the book. Thankfully I didn't have to, as one of my best friends lent me her copy the moment she finished. Superficial: More Adventures from the Andy Cohen Diaries picks up right where we left off (literally). The book continues the same journal entry format.
Within the first few pages we are reminded that Andy is the ultimate A-list celeb. His best friends include: Sarah Jessica Parker, Jimmy Fallon, Jerry Seinfeld, Anderson Cooper, Kelly Ripa, John Mayer, Diane Von Furstenberg and wait for it . . . Cher. Yes, people, Andy texts regularly with Cher. Emojis and all!
As I was reading about Andy's weekly adventures with these mega stars, I would all of sudden notice that my jaw was hanging open. What can I say? I am in awe of his life!
The book covers September 2014 - May 2016, in which many critical things happen. First, Andy has bought not one, not two, but three apartments in his building and is combining them. He enlists Fredrik from Million Dollar Listing to help him find a rental apartment to stay in during the construction and then has a total crisis of conscience when he feels himself falling more in love with his temporary place. Whoops.
During this time frame there is also a lot of drama with The Real Housewives. Teresa is sentenced and goes to prison; Bethenny rejoins the cast of New York; photos emerge of LuAnn's fiancé kissing another woman and Andy and his team cast Dallas and Potomac.
Outside of the Bravo world, Andy is also putting together his own channel on Sirius XM Radio. It was cool to learn about how they pitched him on it, who he decided to give time slots to on his channel and how often he records interviews in between all his other obligations.
In this book we learn more about Andy's romantic life than in either of the other two books combined. He starts seriously dating a guy he nicknamed Brazilian Andy Samberg. It's very cute the way he gushes about him in his diary.
My two favorite elements of the last book and this new installment are Andy's conversations with his mother and his reactions to his dog's behavior. His mother texts him every single night to share her thoughts on his performance on Watch What Happens Live and regularly tells him that his facial hair or his outfit is not flattering. Jewish mothers love the phrase "not flattering."
At least 20 percent of the book is Andy freaking out over his dog's behavior, taking his dog to a trainer, taking his dog to the vet and apologizing when his dog snarls at strangers, or worse, celebs! I am also enamored with my dog, so I could empathize fully.
If you are looking for a delicious beach read this summer, look no further. You don't have to have read either of the previous books to enjoy this. By the end of these 350 pages, you'll be wishing you were a member of Andy's entourage.
