Grey's Anatomy: Riding Solo

Hello friends! I know I am a few days behind on this recap, please forgive me. I just returned from five days in Miami where I stayed with my parents who have not yet embraced the joy that is DVR. Again, my sincere apologies for the tardiness.

In this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy there are changes abound for our crew. First, Dr. Webber steps down as the chief (much to Bailey's chagrin), then Kepner sets up a new office and schedules, and finally, our gang does their first solo surgeries.

I loved when the team took over Kepner's new office. It felt like the Grey's of old, when our favorites used to hang out in the basement and bust each other's chops.

I also got a great laugh from Bailey keeping Dr. Hunt on his toes once he was named the chief of surgery. I want to start a movement called "Chandra Wilson deserves an Emmy." Whose with me?

Cristina got so many great scenes this episode! First she grills the first years on how to do an elementary surgery, then she and Teddy share a shame moment when they realize neither one of them knows how to complete this surgery and lastly, she winds up on the floor of the bathroom with Owen after getting food poisoning from a Chinese food spring roll.

On the more serious side, Alex has a massive freak out about his solo surgery and ultimately loses his patient. He really can't catch a break.

For me, the best scene of the entire episode was toward the end, when Derek tells Meredith he isn't giving up on her because (points to their framed post-it) which is above the heart they drew on the wall. Cue, my heart breaking. I was wondering what was going through his head, as he was clearly furious with Meredith, but as the same time, wasn't walking out on her. This gesture felt like he was finally exposing his wounds.

On an observational note, did anyone else notice how melodramatically each resident's name was being erased from the white board in the hospital as they each finished their surgeries? Was that really necessary? Those were wasted seconds.

I love the preview for next week's episode! First of all, it's set to "It's a Man's World" which is a superb, sexy song and it teases that the next episode will be from the perspective of the men. I can't wait for this!
