Winter has officially arrived in Boston and there is nothing cozier than sipping a hot drink and noshing with friends while the snow falls outside.
Last Sunday I met up with a friend who lives in the South End for brunch. I asked her to pick the place and she recommended La Motta's (which I hadn't heard of). La Motta's is part of the Aquitaine Group, which also includes Aquitaine, Cinquecento, Gaslight and Metropolis.
The restaurant is on Washington Street, right near The Gallows and Boston Chops. This time of year, their red awning feels particularly festive.
I love the pickup truck sign hanging over the front door, which matches their logo.
We were the first people to arrive (at 10:00am on the dot) so they let us choose any table in the restaurant we wanted. Having never been there before, I took a quick stroll around. I swooned when I saw the exposed brick.
The manager shared with us that these doors (that lead to their function room) are original to the space and over 100 years old.
I love how private the booths are. You could sit there for hours and never notice any of the other customers.
I also noticed all the gardening tools on the back wall. Seems like they go with the pickup truck . . .
As you can see, the bar gets beautiful, natural light. This is definitely a place you could dine solo and feel completely comfortable. The staff is so friendly.
Ultimately, we chose a booth across from the bar, giving us a prime, people-watching spot.
We dropped our coats and shimmied into our booth. I couldn't wait to look at the menu.
La Motta's offers an incredible brunch special. For $10 dollars you get coffee or tea, sugar bombs (more on those in a minute) and a choice of one of three entrees. That is a steal!
Despite the allure of the $10 dollar special, we decided to order off the regular menu. My brunch date asked for a cup of coffee and I went for the Bloody Mary.
If you've been reading Pop.Bop.Shop. for a while, you know I think the best Bloody Mary is at The Sinclair Kitchen in Harvard Square. This rendition was tasty, but needed way more kick. And more garnish! Half the reason to order a Bloody is for the veggies / pickles / olives that come with it!
To begin, we ordered the hot sugar bombs, which is crispy brioche, coated in sugar and served with fresh whipped cream.
I don't know about you, but when I hear the word "bomb," I think of something round. I was definitely expecting something more in the shape of a donut hole. This presentation seemed flimsy in comparison.
For the main event, we both created our own omelettes. All omelettes are served with "everything" breakfast potatoes and buttered toast.
My friend decided on mushrooms, spinach and avocado. When the omelette arrived, it reminded me of the brunch omelettes at Aquitaine. Same perfect presentation!
I requested cheddar cheese, tomatoes and avocado and when my plate was placed in front of me I felt my eyes bug out of my head. It was packed with goodies! No skimping here at La Motta's!
The buttered toast was heavenly. The bread was expertly toasted and had a satisfying crunch. The "everything" breakfast potatoes didn't taste seasoned at all, which was a bummer.
Because we had arrived right when they opened, the restaurant was filling up, but not packed as we were finishing our meals. As a result, our waiter let us sit for another 30 minutes (and only pestered us once).
La Motta's was oh-so-cozy and the staff was amazingly welcoming and kind. I'd like to go back and check out their dinner menu.
