When asking friends and family where I should go during my Portland, ME trip, almost every person said, "Make sure to get a pastry at Standard Baking Co." On our first morning of the trip, we took an Uber down to the old port and Standard Baking Co. was our first stop. The assistant innkeeper, Erin, told us the bakery has a very small sign on the street, so it's easy to miss. With that heads up, we were able to spot it as our driver headed toward the address.
As you can see in the photo above, the bakery is right next to the Hilton Garden Inn, a major perk if you are staying there!
We knew we had arrived to the right place by the giant line out front.
Just like at Sofra, my go-to breakfast spot in Watertown, there are as many people in line as there are people out front enjoying their selections. Standard Baking has a shady front patio with plenty of benches. I also noticed they had a giant water bowl for any four-legged visitors.
While we were waiting in line I was checking out the merchandise.
There are packages of cookies lining the right wall, making it easy for you to grab and go.
Of course they make lobster shaped cookies!
The breads at Standard Baking looked gorgeous. It had me wishing I lived locally so I could take a loaf home and serve it with a home cooked meal. The olive bread and the focaccia looked particularly fantastic.
When you finally make it up to the counter there is a lot of pressure to order quickly. I really wanted to take a careful look and snap some photos, but the people behind me were sighing and clearly urging me to hurry up.
How beautiful are those baguettes?
Everything looked so decadent - both the savory and the sweet. Croissants, muffins and tarts - oh my!
I finally decided on the morning bun with walnuts. Visually it reminded me of the sticky bun at Flour Bakery.
The bun was flaky and completely coated in a sticky, sugary glaze. I loved the crunch of the walnuts. The nuts were truly the star of this creation.
My mom ordered a raspberry galette and tucked it away for later.
If you are visiting Portland and staying with friends, stop into Standard Baking Co. on your way and bring them a loaf of bread as a host or hostess gift. I assure you they will be thrilled.
After the bakery we shopped all over the old port.
We loved the stunning gifts in K Collette, the unique pottery at Edgecomb Potters, the kitchen essentials at Le Roux (which is also in Portsmouth, NH), the Maine made goodies at Maine's Pantry, the jewelry at Abacus and the books, cards and gifts at Sherman's Books. I think Sherman's Books was my favorite place we popped into. I found this Good Will Hunting themed cookbook called "How D'Ya Like Them Apples." It took a lot of restraint not to buy it.
I did buy a set of beautiful holiday cards that I am saving for December and a lobster toy for Scout (you can see him playing with it here).
