Dining Out: Michael's Harborside (Part II)

If you've ever spent any time in Newburyport, chances are you enjoyed a drink on the deck at Michael's Harborside. Michael's is really and truly the crown jewel of Newburyport. It's a great place to end the day after you've been out on the boat, around town shopping or even on the beach in one of the nearby towns. Their parking lot is the very first thing you encounter when you come off the Route 1 exit into town.

I went most recently as the final stop of my day trip hosted by Shop Newburyport. It was an unseasonably warm March day and we wandered over on the boardwalk.

You can spot Michael's by its signature red paint.

Inside, the restaurant has two levels. The first floor has a huge deck on the back (usually under an awning during the summer) and then the second floor which has a gorgeous roof deck.

We gave our name at the hostess stand and were ushered to a table in the back corner which overlooked the waterfront.

We were right up against the patio, which will open this year in April, a full month earlier than usual thanks to the warm temperatures we've been having.

It was just about 4:00pm when we sat down and after a full afternoon of walking and shopping we were ready for a cocktail! We both decided to have Bloody Marys, which Michael's makes with Absolut Peppar vodka. Yum City.

Rather than have a full dinner, we opted to share three appetizers. The first to arrive was the spinach and artichoke dip, served bubbling and hot in a bread bowl.

The top of the bread bowl was toasted and had browned nicely. You better believe we ate not just the chips and the veggies, but the bread bowl itself too.

Next up, the fried pickles with sweet chipotle sauce. Whenever I come to Michael's I always get the fried pickles. Their rendition of this popular bar food is excellent. The pickles are thinly sliced, battered and fried to the perfect level of crisp and crunch.

Lastly, my friend ordered the mussels, a recommendation from our waitress. They are served in a white wine garlic herb butter.

She brought an extra bowl for the shells but between our two huge drinks and the three appetizers, we couldn't find room on the table. Alyssa donned the extra bowl as a headdress.

As we noshed our way through this appetizer feast we were happy as two New England clams. We'd had a great afternoon exploring the town, we'd walked along the water and now we had the most beautiful view as we enjoyed a smorgasbord of Michael's finest starters.

I really do love Michael's. My family has shared so many meals there and we have great memories of celebrating big occasions and just making the most of New England summer. If you'd like to see more items from the menu, check out my post from my dinner there two summers ago.

We left Michael's full, happy and already trying to figure out another weekend to come back. We had such a fantastic day in Newburyport.
