Live: The Book Of Mormon

Tomorrow is my mother's birthday. To kick off her week of celebrations, on Wednesday night we went to see The Book of Mormon at the Boston Opera House.

I have been dying to see this show since it first debuted on Broadway in New York. I've heard nothing but rave reviews.

For those who are unfamiliar, the show is written by Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez. You may recognize those first two names as the creators of South Park.

Given the show's scribes, it should come as no surprise that The Book of Mormon is wildly politically incorrect and peppered with expletives. To help temper your shocked reaction, each dance number has super campy choreography. The jazz hands help distract from the never ending zingers.

The show tells the story of two Mormon missionaries, Elder Price and Elder Cunningham, sent to Uganda to convert the local people.

In our performance, the squeaky clean Elder Price was played by Mark Evans and the chubby, zany Elder Cunningham was played by Dana Joel Nicholson. The character of Elder Cunningham reminded me so much of William Barfee in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

I wasn't able to find any photos of the Boston production, but here are some shots from the original cast on Broadway:

And here is that campy choreography I mentioned:

I think my favorite number was Baptize Me, a duet between Elder Cunningham and the most beautiful girl in the village, Nabulungi:

The Book of Mormon definitely met my expectations. I laughed hysterically the entire time and this cast has some seriously powerful vocal chops. Wow.

If you missed The Book of Mormon here in Boston, Goldstar is currently running a deal for tickets in Providence, RI. Check that out here.

Did you see The Book of Mormon? Which number was your favorite?
