Stay: 70 Park Avenue Hotel

As you've been hearing me mention in the last few posts, I recently spent eight days in New York City. Normally when I travel to New York for work I try to stay at the Gramercy Park Hotel. What can I say? It's my favorite.

This trip I wasn't able to stay at Gramercy Park, so my company's travel agent recommended a hotel called 70 Park. It wasn't until I printed my itinerary the morning of the trip that I noticed the hotel was a Kimpton!

For those who aren't familiar, Kimpton is a boutique hotel chain and they are famous for three things:

  • Complimentary happy hour for guests every day from 5pm - 6pm (Happy hour is defined as unlimited red or white wine)
  • Animal friendly hotels
  • Animal print robes in every closet

I stayed in my first Kimpton in July 2011 when I traveled to San Francisco. That hotel, the Hotel Palomar, is still one of the best places I've ever stayed.

70 Park is located at the corner of 38th Street and Park Avenue. This was the ideal location for me because I was splitting my time between an office at 33rd and 6th Avenue and a conference at 42nd Street and Park Avenue (Grand Central Station). It was the perfect address for me for the week.

The lobby of the hotel was gorgeous!

It had a large lounge area that was super cozy.

There were also tables for two by the windows, perfect for people watching.

Each table had a set of Tic Tac Toe. How fun!

When I checked in the woman at reception could not have been nicer. She was warm, welcoming, enthusiastic and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job.

I took the elevator up to my room and immediately noticed the fun carpet in the hallway and the bright, teal wallpaper.

Look at that striped texture.

I opened the door to my room and I was in love. The color palette was plum (the color of my living room), hot pink and silver metallic. Hello! Meant for me.

Over the bed was the hot pink piece of art work, which was the clear focal point of the room.
The bedding shined with silver pillows and the foot of the bed was draped with a purple, floral blanket.
The two night stands were very mod. You don't often see white leather!
I also had a sophisticated reading chair in a deep eggplant color.

Across from the bed was a silver table (meant for your suitcase) that looked like a life size chess piece. The opposite wall also had a full length mirror, desk and the TV. The TV had HBO, which was such a treat for me!

When I saw the armoire I couldn't wait to open it up and see what animal print robe I would have - Leopard? Zebra?

Leopard it is!

At first I was confused about where the bathroom was, but I quickly realized it was behind a sliding, mirrored door.

There it is!

The bathroom was definitely narrow and it had zero counter space.

What it did have was the signature Kimpton toiletries which are stylishly packaged.

The shower in my room had terrible water pressure all week long. It basically just dribbled out of the shower head. I was surprised because the hotel and the room were so elegant, but the shower was really pretty miserable.

Other than the shower, my experience at 70 Park was excellent. The staff were all so kind, friendly and helpful, especially the doormen who always held the door for me and hailed me cabs almost every night.

The location was beyond perfect and it was a pleasure to come home every night to my pink and purple room, snuggle into my big bed and watch HBO. Sigh.

Have you ever stayed in a Kimpton Hotel?
