Dining Out: Anthem

When I first made the decision to pursue a job downtown one of the things I was most excited about was exploring the restaurants in my new neighborhood. Tonight I had my first post-work meal in my new 'hood!

I met a friend who works nearby at Anthem. I walk past Anthem every morning on my way from the Government Center T stop to my office. I checked out the menu this morning and suggested to her that we should check it out.

In the nice weather Anthem has several outdoor tables along the front and the side of the restaurant. Tonight, since it was sprinkling, no one was sitting outside.

We were seated at a high top table in the bar area. As I started to look around I noticed there is actually a second level of tables that look down on the bar area. I can imagine on Saturday night, with music blaring that those tables are the hot spots.

The bar area also boasted a stunning light fixture that hung down in the center of the room:

From our table we had a great view of Faneuil Hall and all the foot traffic in and out of the hyper touristy area.

The friend I met for dinner is currently on the Atkins diet, which doesn't allow for most carbs. Given those restrictions, we both ordered mellow menu items.

She ordered the Caesar salad with steak. Though it was a good sized portion, somehow a few pieces of chicken made it into her salad. Not cool.

I opted for the veggie burger. It was surprisingly flavorful and delicious. I asked for it to come topped with pepper jack cheese which was a great choice. The burger also came with a large side of french fries which were good, but not great.

I wouldn't visit Anthem again for dinner, but I think it would be a great place to sit outside for happy hour, order a few appetizers and drink. They had several appetizers that looked good including cheese fondue, homemade potato chips and dip and a Mediterranean platter.

One restaurant down, several more to go! I look forward to sharing all my explorations with you as I poke around this new neighborhood!
