New Discovery: Boston Med

A few weeks ago my cousin sent me an email telling me about a new show airing on ABC called Boston Med. As we're from Boston, naturally I was intrigued. The show is documentary style and follows the doctors and nurses at Mass General Hospital (MGH), Brigham and Women's Hospital and Children's Hospital. My cousin has received incredible care at Children's Hospital for over 10 years, so he was particularly excited to see them receive some extra attention.

Tonight will be the third episode of the series and I was hooked after episode one! The first hour focuses on a cardiothoracic surgeon flying to harvest a pair of donor lungs and then return to the hospital to transplant them in two different patients. We learn the back story of the doctor, the two patients, see both surgeries, the doctor sharing the results with the families, and ultimately, the patients being discharged from the hospital. And I was weeping. See the video below where the surgeon, Dr. Daniel DiBardino, talks about filming the show:

Last week's episode was even more emotional, centering around a young pregnant woman whose husband was in Iraq for her entire pregnancy. She learned early in the pregnancy her baby had a severe heart defect. They weren't sure if he would even live one day. Well, we get to see this patient's husband land at Logan airport, be present for the birth, watch his baby go in and come out of emergency heart surgery, and then thankfully, go on to make it to his first birthday! Thank you ABC for showing us baby Sam was ok.

Last week was also fun because our family friend Eric Nadel, head of emergency medicine at MGH, was featured on the show during the MGH residency graduation! I squealed to see someone I know on the television!

I can't wait to see what's in store tonight! Boston Med airs every Thursday night at 10:00 pm on ABC.

While we wait, check out this piece on Good Morning America about featured MGH emergency room nurse Amanda Grabowski.
