One of my 2020 New Year's resolutions is to read 30 books this year. I am currently on book number six!
In January, when I was planning for my trip to Israel, I knew any books I packed had to be gripping. With two, twelve-hour flights ahead of me, I knew I needed stories that would reel me in and keep me hooked.
A friend, who is also a big reader, had just finished One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus and said, "Even though it's YA, I think you'd really like it."
I would describe the premise of this book as one part Pretty Little Liars, one part Gossip Girl. It follows a group of four high school students as they find themselves suspects in the sudden death of a classmate.
All five students were in detention together, when one person in the class got up to take a drink of water and had an allergic reaction (we learn later how exactly that happened) and died.
The book switches narrators from chapter to chapter, going back and fourth between the four students who are suspects: Bronwyn, Addy, Cooper and Nate.
Bronwyn is the brainy one. I felt like her character had to be inspired by Spencer Hastings from Pretty Little Liars. Her father is a well known leader in the community and before all of this madness, she was planning to apply to Yale.
Addy is the quintessential homecoming queen. Known for her beauty and her hunky boyfriend, no one can imagine she's be culpable.
Cooper is hiding two secrets - one about his athletic performance and another about this sexual orientation - which are both likely to be exposed during the investigation.
Then there's Nate, already on parole for dealing drugs, he is just starting to put his life back together. He's under the most immediate scrutiny because of his past.
The book is 416 pages, but I flew through it! It's one of those where each chapter ends of a moment of suspense and you tell yourself, "Ok, one more."
When I purchased the book at Porter Square Books in Cambridge, MA, the woman who was helping me said, "You just missed her! She did an event here earlier in the week." Apparently Karen McManus lives in Cambridge. She also went to Holy Cross for undergrad and Northeastern for her master's. A true Massachusetts gal!
In addition to reading the book, you'll also be able to enjoy the story when it comes the screen on Peacock, the new streaming service from NBC. Deadline wrote an awesome piece on the casting for the show.
