On our third night in Curacao, we drove to Willemstad for our dinner reservation at BijBlauw. We discovered it through an article in Town & Country called, "The Best Things to Do, Eat, and See in Curacao."
BijBlauw is a property with three sections: a boutique hotel, a home decor store and a restaurant. It's located on Pietermaai, a street that overlooks the ocean.
When we arrived, we gave our name to the host and he said, "Ah, yes. Your party has one vegetarian and one gluten-free person, right?" It's always nice to have your reservation notes recited back to you at check in!
He then led us to our table on the outdoor patio. We started weaving through the tables and he walked us by row after row after row until we were at a table right on the water.
We settled in just as the sun was setting and we couldn't believe our good fortune.
Because BijBlauw also has a decor store, each table is set beautifully.
Our table had a mix of hurricane glass vases with candles and ornate flower vases.
To begin, we ordered a round of cocktails. One gin martini, one margarita, one aperol spritz and one caipirinha.
On the cocktail menu, we noticed a section of "small bites" and decided to get to nachos for the table.
While this was a very sophisticated presentation, they were sparing with the cheese and we felt disappointed. One of my friends joked, "This is really more like a nachos tease. Not a lot of chips or cheese or toppings!"
For the main course, the friend sitting next to me went with the snapper.
After a few bites, she said, "This is delicious. I don't eat snapper often, but this is really light and the sauce is yummy. The couscous on the side is great. Very tasty!"
Across from me, a friend selected the chicken roulade which came with broccoli and dollops of mashed potato.
She shared, "I've never had roulade before and I have to say, it was a bit dry. The side dishes were great - the broccoli was cooked perfectly and the mashed potatoes had shallots mixed in."
Next to her, a friend had chosen the beet steak.
She admitted, "I didn't mean to order a vegan meal. I wish there had been a flavorful sauce over the beets. It was just missing something."
I decided on the mushroom risotto, topped with a poached egg. Interestingly, there was vegetarian risotto on the menu of every restaurant we went to at dinner time the entire trip.
The egg was cooked expertly and when I put my fork through the center, the yoke ran down into the rice. The risotto had just the right amount of truffle and it was topped with whole almonds, which gave every bite a satisfying crunch.
BijBlauw did have a dessert menu, but everything was too exotic. We were craving old fashion ice cream sundaes, which we wound up getting on the way home.
The magic of BijBlauw is the location. Our table gave a whole new meaning to the concept of waterfront dining. We heard the waves lapping against the sea wall all throughout dinner and it was so calming.
I also want to shout out the staff at BijBlauw, who were so accommodating and kind about our food restrictions. Each time they would bring over a new dish, they would let us know what we could eat in case we wanted to share.
This meal is one of my happiest memories of the trip.
