Dining Out: Picnic Jackson Hole

I have just returned to Boston after a five-day vacation in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was my first time there and I truly fell in love with it - the mountan views, the crisp air, the majestic wildlife, the Lincoln Log-style buildings - the list goes on.

On our first day, we took an early flight from Minneapolis, Minnesota and arrived just after 8:00am. We were able to get our rental car quickly (thank you, Avis!) and headed straight for downtown.

The airport is delightfully close, just 15 minutes away from the best dining and shopping. The drive is incredibly scenic. I had my head out the window like an excited dog on a summer day.

Our destination was Picnic, a local favorite for breakfast and lunch. As soon as we opened the door and I saw how bustling it was, it reminded me of my neighborhood hot spot, Sofra

We got in line and there were about six people in front of us. The wait gave me time to oggle the mouth-watering pastry case.

The croissants looked particularly amazing.

We placed our order and the very patient woman at the counter gave us a number to take to our table. She advised, "Sit wherever you want - inside or outside - we'll find you."

Luckily, there was a table available on their outdoor patio. We wound up sitting next to a woman in her seventies who is from Brookline, Massachussetts! Her second home is in Jackson Hole and she gave us some great advice on activities and restaurants.

My breakfast dish was the first to arrive. I went with the avocado toast (basic, I know). A thick slice of crusty, multigrain toast was the base, topped with avocado, radish, tomatoes, feta cheese, micro greens and smoked salt.

This was a beautiful presentation and the multigran bread was hearty and delicious. It felt like cardio cutting through it with a butter knife, but that's part of the fun, isn't it?

Two of the girls ordered the herbed egg sandwich and we audibly gasped when we saw how tall it was!

Picnic Herbed Egg

It's two pieces of foccacia with egg soufflé, ricotta cheese, bacon and basil pesto.

After her first two bites, one friend said, "Everything tastes great together. The salt from the bacon pairs perfectly with the fluffy eggs and the zesty basil pesto. This bread is so wonderfully puffy!"

One of the gals ordered what's called the Jackson Hippie. It's a gluten-free English muffin topped with egg white soufflé, roasted summer squash, beet chips, arugula, goat cheese, Mexican crema and cilantro.

Much like the herbed egg sandwich, this too was sky high. While enjoying the sandwich, my friend shared, "I just can't believe how many delicious ingredients there are in here. It's both sweet and savory. And I would give this gluten-free English muffin a 10/10."

Now, I forgot to take a picture of the beverages, but between us we got several coffees and an ice tea. I had the crimson berry ice tea, which was super refreshing. The top drink went to the iced honey lavender latte. "I want to live inside this beverage," was a direct quote as it was being sipped.

Throughout our breakfast I kept thinking how similar Picnic felt to Sofra. However, Picnic offers a "locals only" pick up line, which I wish Sofra would adopt!

If you're headed to Jackson Hole, Picnic is located at 1110 Maple Way. It's directly across the street from the post office if you're looking to mail some postcards home to family and friends.

After this delicious start to the morning, we headed to Boot Barn so the gals could try on cowboy boots. Shout out to Marla and Brayden at Boot Barn who were so patient with us as we tried on dozens of pairs and took countless silly videos.
