One of my favorite places to take first-time visitors to Miami is a neighborhood called Wynwood. The area used to be home to mostly warehouses and storage spaces, but has been transformed into a thriving, artist community.
The heart of Wynwood is the Wynwood Walls.
This outdoor exhibition feels larger than life.
No matter what time of day you go, there are swarms of people with cameras and selfie sticks trying to snap photos in front of these impressive works.
Just inside the gate is Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, the optimal place to dine and take in great views of the murals.
Right now, the outdoor patio overlooks this wall with the message "Rise above."
There is something very mesmerizing about the geometric pattern of this face.
Some sassy, cartoon ladies adorn this gate facing one of the adjacent restaurants.
I love this mural. I wish they sold postcards of it!
Some of the works are extra abstract. To be honest, I don't understand this one at all.
This wall felt like a modern take on the famous painting American Gothic by Grant Wood. The red heart is so striking.
I felt a bit haunted by this piece.
Did you catch the girl with the camera in the far corner? I'd like to think I look slightly cooler than this while snapping blog photos.
My sister, cousin and I stopped to take a quick selfie (guilty!).
Then a very sweet couple from Philadelphia offered to take our picture if we didn't mind taking theirs. Love this wide shot!
Around the corner, we discovered an elephant / octopus hybrid.
I love the way this mural of a woman surrounded by butterflies is set beneath the shade of the trees.
All of the walls are sandwiched between lush green grass and that beautiful, blue, Miami sky. It's impossible not to feel energized and inspired as you walk around.
The art of Wynwood extends beyond the walls, out into the rest of the neighborhood. Painter Magnus Sodamin has transformed the outside of the Wynwood Diner into a stunning canvas.
A few doors down, Mister Block Cafe feels like you've walked into an inkblot.
Each side street has quirky and charming shops. We couldn't resist documenting this sign that read, "Why be moody when you can shake your booty."
If you're planning a trip to Miami, Wynwood has to be on your short list. Exploring the Wynwood Walls is a fun, outdoor activity and the best part is, it's completely free.
