I love Coolidge Corner in Brookline, but for the past year I've been feeling pretty fatigued by its restaurant scene. That's why I was overjoyed to hear there was a new kid on the block - Prairie Fire. The wood-oven pizza joint takes the space formerly occupied by Lineage, directly across from the Trader Joe's parking lot and Bruegger's Bagels.
You can see in the photo below that they are so new they don't even have their official sign up yet!
Prairie Fire is run by the same team behind Steel & Rye in Milton, MA. In the Brookline space, the furniture is simple and neutral. The walls are begging for art work (and personality!).
We were lucky to snag the last two-top on the night we went, a Thursday around 7:30pm. Our waitress was warm and friendly, giving us time to look over the menu.
We each ordered a glass of wine, sangiovese for me and pinot grigio for my dinner date.
Whenever I go to a new restaurant, I like to sample as many menu items as possible. We started with the grilled beans with peanuts and mustard vinaigrette.
The beans had a substantial and satisfying snap with every bite. We both loved the char from the wood-fire oven. My friend commented, "I was really hoping for a stronger mustard flavor."
Next, we tried the zucchini salad with cherry tomatoes, pecorino cheese, pecans and lime vinaigrette.
This was a super generous portion and tasted unbelievably fresh. The zoodles (zucchini + noodles) had a great crunch, the pecans added some sweetness and the lime vinaigrette tied it all together with a nice citrus zing.
We ordered a second salad (why not?), the grilled little gem lettuce with crispy shallots, radishes, toasted seeds and ranch dressing. I will order anything that come with ranch dressing.
We wanted to love this salad, but we just didn't. The radishes had a strange taste and texture and the ranch was a bit runny and watery.
Of course we had to order a wood-fired pizza as well. We selected the mushroom pizza with kale, roasted leeks, bechamel and fontina.
We each took a piece of the pie and after one bite, discovered the bottom of both of our slices were completely and totally burnt. I am talking black. Weirdly, the crust on the top with a bit undercooked and too doughy. We also felt like the pizza didn't have that signature, earthy mushroom taste. I wound up dousing my slice in crushed red pepper to strengthen the flavor.
Though our particular pizza was a bit of a bust, we still entertained looking at the dessert menu. We decided on the chocolate pudding with Oreo and mint ice cream. When we ordered it, our waitress said, "We've had bit of a modification to that dessert tonight. Instead of mint ice cream, it's a mint whipped cream. Is that ok?" We went for it.
The dessert that arrived looked a bit deconstructed. Almost like a dirt dessert had spilled over. If you don't know what a dirt dessert is, you were robbed during childhood.
Each bite had the exact same flavor profile as a mint Milano cookie. The Oreo crumbles tasted like the chocolate crunchies in Carvel ice cream cakes. For me, the mint cream had a bit of a weird consistency.
Overall, I think Prairie Fire has a lot of potential, but it's just not there yet. The space needs some more decorative and memorable touches and they still need to work out some kinks with the menu.
