Last weekend my family traveled up to Camden, Maine for four days of waterfront fun. The furthest north I had ever been in Maine was Bath, so I was excited to explore a brand new town.
Prior to the trip, my mother and I did extensive restaurant research for the town of Camden and the four surrounding towns - Rockland, Rockport, Waldoboro and Warren. One of the places we flagged was Camden Deli, which we read about in Moon Coastal Maine. Yes, my parents still purchase paperback guidebooks.
The guidebook advised visiting Camden Deli and sitting on the top floor, which has a roof deck on the back side that overlooks the harbor. Let me tell you, this was a pro tip. From the street, the deli looks like a bustling takeout spot, but you would never know there was a roof deck.
We arrived at 12:30pm and thankfully were able to score a table for five on the deck. This was the view from our seats:

Our waitress handed each of us a menu and I was pleasantly surprised to find a ton of vegetarian options in every category.
Camden Deli is one of those places, like Bartley's Burgers in Harvard Square, that has hilarious names for its sandwiches. The menu features monikers like The Mistress, The Selectman and The Lazy Jack.
While we studied the menu, the boys ordered two pints of Andrew's Ale, which they described to me as, "A red / amber ale." Men of few words, as you can see. The beer is brewed in Lincolnville, Maine.
We placed our sandwich orders and everything arrived very quickly. My sister ordered a cup of tomato soup (which she said tasted like marinara sauce) and the veggie focaccia sandwich. It came stuffed with artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, tomato, grilled onion, fresh basil, mozzarella cheese and pesto.
After a few bites she said, "This bread was listed as focaccia, but it really tasted more like an English muffin. I got the sandwich for the bread, so that was disappointing. It also needed more pesto."
Next to her, my mom ordered The Olad which was chicken with cheddar cheese, grilled onion, roasted red peppers and mustard on sourdough. She commented, "I loved the sourdough bread and this was super filling. I just wish it had more red peppers!"
My brother-in-law chose The Surprise, which he told me is "basically a solid turkey club." He added, "This had great bacon and the avocado was awesome."
I went with The Lazy Jack (mostly because it was a fun order to say out loud), which was monterey jack cheese, avocado, tomato, black olives and mixed greens.
They were quite stingy with the amount of cheese, so even once I had eaten both halves, I was still hungry. Also, black olives in a sandwich sounded delicious on the menu, but in reality, they kept falling out of the sandwich! It was raining olives at my seat.
My dad declined to have his sandwich photographed, claiming, "This isn't very pretty for a picture. I'm just going to go ahead and eat it." He went with The Mistress, which was roast beef, turkey, cheddar cheese, grilled Bermuda onion and horseradish on rye. At the end of the meal he admitted, "It had a tempting menu description, but was disappointing in real life."
Overall, the whole family agreed that the sandwiches at Camden Deli were a B, but the view was A+.
