Sugar Fix: Freddo

When I flew to Miami for Thanksgiving last November, my parents couldn't wait to report to me that a new gelato place had opened just three blocks from their front door. When we didn't make it there over Turkey Day weekend, I vowed to get there on my next visit.

The gelato place in question is called Freddo. The company was founded in 1969 in Buenos Aires, Argentina and now has over 150 locations across the globe.

The location near my parents is on South Miami Avenue. The storefront doesn't have an enclosed patio, but they have a generous number of tables and chairs out front.

Inside the shop, one wall is decorated with a chalkboard that details Freddo's signature gelato making process.

Even before we arrived, I already knew what I was getting. Freddo is famous for their take on the Argentine cookies called alfajores, which are like macarons, stuck together with a thick layer of dulce de leche. At Freddo, they make what they call the alfajor gelato, which is two cookies stuffed with dulce de leche gelato.

Little did I know the order would come with two alfajor sandwiches! My parents helped me demolish these. After we'd made them disappear, we all agreed that the cookies actually tasted more like graham crackers than true alfajores.

My dad decided to get two flavors, dark chocolate and tramontana (mini cookie dough truffles and dulce de leche swirls).

The dark chocolate was super creamy, rich and decadent. It's made with 70% cocoa. The tramontana was packed with sugary goodies and made even more enjoyable by the smoothness of the gelato.

My mom ordered the mango sorbet (she's severely lactose intolerant), which she loved. So much so, she kept trying to force us to take bites.

I am glad I experienced the famous alfajor gelato, but next time I plan to try the milk chocolate with almonds or the ducle de leche chocolate chip.
