Dining Out: Mei Mei Street Kitchen

Happy Friday!

For over a year now I have been wanting to taste the Double Awesome at the Mei Mei food truck. It's one of those dishes that local foodies rave about.

I was perfectly content to wait until Mei Mei and I crossed paths naturally, until I saw these drool inducing photos on Chow Down Beantown.

The very next day I left work around 12:00pm to walk up to Dewey Square and order my first Double Awesome.

When we arrived around 12:15pm the line for Mei Mei was already about 30 people deep.

See how far back we had to stand?

The Mei Mei truck is simply decorated. A white truck with thin blue writing and a fish leaping on the left side.

The front of the truck says, "Eat Mei" (get it, like 'Eat Me') which I find hilarious.

The daily specials are listed on the side of the truck in chalk. You know how I love a colored chalkboard.

Mei Mei also displays a list of the local farms they source their ingredients from.

The team inside the truck is hard working. Boy do those guys (and girl) hustle!

When I got up to the window, I laughed at their creative attempt to illicit more tips. The small sign reads, "Who could eat more Double Awesomes? Vote with your tips!"

After you place your order you step off the side and there are more chalkboards leaning against the truck, one of which announces Mei Mei's plans for a brick and mortar restaurant. Very exciting!

My lunch date and I took our food and walked over to a shady bench on the Greenway.

The first order of business: taste the mysterious Double Awesome. Mei Mei's signature dish is a scallion pancake stuffed with slow poached eggs, cheddar cheese and pesto.

The scallion pancake was good, but I wish it had been a little crispier. The egg was delicious and made even better by the pesto. I wasn't into the cheddar cheese. It added a sharp taste to the sandwich that overpowered every bite.

We also sampled the cheddar fritters. From the outside they looked crunchy and I knew they would be hot on the inside.

The inside of the fritters didn't taste like much, but the sauce drizzled over them tasted like BBQ potato chips! It was the strangest sensation.

It was such a hot day and I wanted a cold drink so I ordered the Haymaker's Punch. It was awful! It tasted like straight vinegar.

The ingredients were: cider vinegar, cranberry bitters and honey, all served over ice.

After a year of anticipation, I was happy to have finally experienced the Double Awesome. Though I love all of the sandwich's ingredients, I didn't love them all together. I think had the sandwich not included cheddar cheese, I might have been totally sold.

Have you ever had the Double Awesome? Are you hooked or does another truck offer something better?
