Dining Out: Street

Happy Mother's Day everyone! An extra special shout out to all of my family members and friends who became mamas for the first time this year. Enjoy your day with your little ones!

Though my own mother may have been far far away in the Florida Keys today, that didn't mean I couldn't have a killer Mother's Day brunch like everyone else.

My friend and I headed up to Portsmouth, NH early in the morning - destination: Street. We had been planning this trip north all week and I asked a friend who lives locally for a brunch recommendation. She gave me two choices, but bluntly said, "Though I gave you a second option, I highly recommend you go with Street. It's the only place I take friends when they come to visit."

We arrived at Street on this very rainy morning and there was already a line out the door.

My brunch date was kind enough to hold our place while I snapped some pictures.

I was excited to see the restaurant has an outdoor patio which in the nicer weather will be glorious.

As soon as you step inside the doorway you get the funky vibe. I love this aqua paint color.

To reach the hostess stand you walk through vinyl red curtains. It feels like you're walking backstage at a concert.

The inside of the restaurant is so ecclectic and unique. The red paint screams from the walls and the industrial lightings, chairs and stools give it an urban/hipster vibe.

On the right side is the main dining room which has several booths big enough for large parties.

On the left side is the bar area which has about 15 seats at the bar, plus two booths and a few high top tables.

There is brightly colored art work all over the space.

I couldn't help but notice this mirror behind the bar, it feels very Evil Queen from Snow White.

All over the restaurant there are globes, a nod to the restaurant's commitment to exceptional, global street food.

While we were waiting to be seated, we happened to notice a tray of cinnamon buns, presumably for the taking. Dangerous!

We wound up with two seats at the bar and the bartender was awesome. She had great energy, a fierce pixie hair cut and was wearing a pink tulle skirt. I mean?

She handed us menus and we were totally overwhelmed. It's not that the Street menu is large, it's that absolutely everything sounds amazing.

We started by selecting cocktails, a mimosa for her and a bloody Mary for me.

The mimosa came in a stemless glass and she commented, "This was the perfect ratio of OJ to champagne."

My bloody Mary came garnished with a giant green olive, a pepperoncini and a lemon wedge. I reached right for that tooth pick and ate the whole pepperoncini. Yum!

The liquid part of the cocktail was excellent. I had my first bloody Mary at Rosa Mexicano a few months ago and now I am totally hooked.

I should also mention, Street was running a lovely Mother's Day special. Any moms in the house were invited to enjoy a complimentary "Mom-osa," a cocktail of champagne, grapefruit juice and hibiscus. How sweet is that?

I mentioned earlier that we saw a plate of unclaimed cinnamon buns so naturally we asked the bartender what the story was. She asked, "Oh, would you like one? I can get you one easily. With fruit and nuts or without?"

About 30 seconds later a cinnamon bun arrived, garnished with pecans and dried cherries. Look at this!

It was incredible. Too rich to eat a second one, but sublime.

After the bun, we were finally ready to make some choices. My friend decided on the huevos rancheros. The plate arrived and both of our mouths dropped.

This version is basically a deconstructed breakfast burrito. The bottom of the plate is fully coated in melted cheese, then topped with eggs, beans, salsa, sour cream, fresh slices of avocado and jalapeños. Street also adds pita crisps, which basically taste like the outside of a quesadilla.

She was nice enough to share a nibble of the crisp with me and it was so good! She said, "Two bites and I am already in love with this dish."

I chose a dish called the Asian experience which is an open face omelette with cabbage, carrots, broccoli, scallions, sesame seeds and a sririacha aioli.

It was basically a thin omelette that tasted like the world's best scallion pancake. I loved the kick from the sriracha aioli drizzled over the top.

I also received a potato on the side. Their version of home fries is a fried potato cake that tastes like the most crispy, delicious Hanukkah potato latke you've ever had. Also, it's very easy to eat with your hands. Real classy over here, I know.

By the time we made it through our drinks, our cinnamon buns and both of our enormous plates of eggs, we were stuffed to the brim. We both agreed we would make the trip up to Portsmouth just to eat at Street and turn right back around.

Before we left, I made a quick trip to the ladies room which was covered in graffiti! Would you expect anything less from a restaurant called Street?
