Grey's Anatomy: The Race Is On

To my loyal readers, thank you for your patience over the past two days. Blogger, the program I use to publish this blog, was down Thursday evening through Friday evening, making it impossible for me to share my thoughts with you about this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy!

This week's episode reminded me why I fell in love with this show. I have always said the best episodes of Grey's are the ones that are fifty percent humorous, fifty percent gut wrenching and that is what Shonda Rhimes delivered this week!

I found Cristina's story line to be particularly humorous. First she tells Owen no sex until he chooses a chief resident, then she decides to hide a patient from Teddy so she can remove a tree she found growing in his lung. As she put it, "See, just like me, this tree survived in a hostile environment." Hysterical.

Speaking of Teddy, I cannot believe she is going to Germany with the crisis therapist! I really thought she and Scott Foley would eventually fall in love and give their marriage a real shot. I hope he pulls a grand gesture out of his back pocket before she boards the plane!

On the subject of boarding planes, I was stunned when Lucy (the OB/GYN) applied for Arizona's vacant position in Africa. Of course she was hurt when Karev didn't care if she relocated to Texas, but stealing that position right out from under him? Cold. I guess that's the end of her.

After watching this week's episode I've decided I want to throw a pity party for Dr. Avery. First he drops out of the Chief's trial because he's afraid his association with Harper Avery will keep the Chief from being nominated for the prestigious award, then he tells Lexi, "I don't need the trial. I have you," when she is completely fixated on Mark again. At what point do you think Lexi will share her reinvigorated feelings for Mark?

I've been saving my strongest opinion for last and it's about Alex Karev. Since the very first episode of this show, the writers have positioned Alex as the jerk. He's only out for himself, he's promiscuous, he's combative and at times, violent. Then via story lines with Eva, Izzie and his younger brother, we learn he does have a heart. However, the writers continually keep him tip toeing back and forth between that line of asshole and martyr. This week he continues his quest to serve the African children and he realizes he needs to apologize to Lucy. When that doesn't go his way, he tosses back a few drinks and spills the beans to Owen that Meredith tampered with the Alzheimer's trial. I found myself questioning, at the core of it all, is he really such an ass?

In previews for next week, the clips suggest that Meredith and Derek are granted the adoption of Zola, but Derek leaves Meredith after finding out she tampered with the trial. Apparently the Chief also fires her. Oh boy, here we go! Countdown to the finale is on!
