Movie Musings: Eclipse

To kick off the long weekend I went with two girlfriends to see the third installment of the Twilight saga, Eclipse. Let me preface this review by saying, I don't go to the Twilight movies expecting to see cinematic gold. I go to see how they translate the book into film, and for two hours of Taylor Lautner's abs.

I really enjoyed Eclipse for multiple reasons. First, I was so happy to see them go into the back stories of Rosalie, Jasper, and the Quilette tribe. I wasn't sure if they would cut those for time, but both Rosalie and Jasper's stories are critical, Rosalie's in particular in Breaking Dawn.

The action sequences in this movie were the best so far. There is a significant battle scene toward the close of the film that explodes across the screen. The CGI used to create the werewolves also seems superior in this movie. There is one particular scene where Bella is comforting Jacob (in his werewolf form) and it looks completely realistic.

I was happy to see Bella's father Charlie get more screen time. They've been writing him some fantastic lines and he brings humor to these odd situations. Also hilarious was Anna Kendrick as Bella's classmate Jessica. I have been so used to seeing her promoting Up in the Air, it was fun to see her back in this sassy role.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the tent scene, which is the most famous vignette in the Eclipse novel. The writers created a moment on screen that captured the original scene almost perfectly. Edward absolutely smoldered in that scene, and I'm one hundred percent Team Jacob, so that's saying a lot.

Edward and Bella's relationship progresses quite a bit in this film setting the audience up perfectly for Breaking Dawn. I can't wait to see how they create their wedding and their love cottage deep in the woods. I am most excited to see how they bring Renesme to life for the fourth and fifth films.

Now we're back to waiting again! Until part four.
