Movie Musings: The Last Song

Tonight I went with a friend to see the movie The Last Song. This friend is a huge fan of Miley Cyrus and has read every Nicholas Sparks book. She has also seen every film adaptation of his stories. I agreed to go because the preview looked tolerable, it was filmed on Tybee Island (where I have been and loved) and it stars Greg Kinnear (yummy). I know I'm getting old because I was more attracted to Greg Kinnear (who plays Miley Cyrus' dad) than the beefcake hired to play her love interest.

For those who haven't read the book (I hadn't) here is the quick download - Miley Cyrus plays a recent high school grad who comes to Tybee Island for the summer with her younger brother to spend some time with their dad. Their parents are divorced, and as a result, Miley's character Ronnie has a lot of bitterness and an enormous chip on her shoulder. As part of her bitter barn party she has given up her supreme gift - the piano.

The movie chronicles this transformative summer that alters Ronnie and her younger brother's lives forever. Her little brother, played by Bobby Coleman, gives the best performance in the movie. He has the best comedic timing and the most sincere crying/mourning chops. You may recognize Coleman from his roles in Martian Child with John Cusack and Post Grad with Alexis Bledel.

While the story line of this movie was painfully predictable, there were some strong performances, and I must admit, I was weeping by the end. If you've read any Nicholas Sparks books or seen any of the subsequent movies, someone always passes away. That's just how he rolls.

While no one will be winning an Oscar for this film, I definitely enjoyed it. If Miley Cyrus can make it this far with a snaggletooth grin, then gosh darn it, there is still hope for my pop super stardom! Also, Miley wore several outfits in the film that I absolutely loved. Her style was bohemian meets East Village rock. In this shot below, she cleans up nicely for a wedding at a wealthy family's estate.

A celeb gossip fun fact - Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth are in love in this film and also off screen. Filming this movie sparked their real life romance. If their chemistry seems off the charts, its because they were practicing off set!
