Roadtrip: Blue Blinds Bakery

Pilgrims? The Mayflower? Freshly Baked Bread?

Yes! Its true! You can find all three of these things in Plymouth, MA as I discovered this past weekend.

On Easter Sunday I took a day trip down to the town where it all began, Plymouth. Despite living in Massachusetts my entire life, I had never been to the historic town. Sunday was a beautiful, sunny day and as the blue ocean water shimmered, we found ourselves somewhere else blue . . . the Blue Blinds Bakery on North Street in Plymouth Center.

The Blue Blinds Bakery is part of a two-location enterprise. A self sustainable community that grows all their own food (based in Plymouth), has a natural foods store called Common Sense, and just around the corner is the bakery.

The Blue Blinds Bakery has a beautiful front porch with a family of rocking chairs. Inside there are two large rooms. One when you first walk in with the counter and the display case, and the second room has tables and chairs, couches and arm chairs for eating and relaxing. The bakery is very spacious, gets great sun light, and has beautiful murals painted on all the walls.
The menu consists of french toast, waffles, pancakes, scones, breads, pies, fruit, cheese and for lunch time - soup. The very friendly man behind the counter described to us all the kinds of freshly baked bread so we could make an informed decision. Personally, I was staring at the blueberry pie.

We wound up ordering the fruit and cheese plate, the vegetable minestrone soup, and the iced hibiscus fruit cooler as a drink. The fruit and cheese plate was beautiful and a very generous portion. The soup was hearty and delicious, and came with your choice of any kind of bread. We opted to try the cinnamon raisin walnut. The drink we ordered was a beautiful shade of plum purple and was a combination of hibiscus tea, black tea and little bit of orange juice. I would drive all the way back to Plymouth just for that drink.
As we finished, our plates were cleared by the very attentive staff and even the vase of flowers on our table was freshened!

I cannot wait to go back and try the blueberry pie (I am obsessed), the cheddar jalapeno bread, and the french toast! And the best part is, I can go anytime I want, because the bakery is open 24 hours. That's right, sleepy Plymouth has a 24 hour bakery. Who would have thought?

The Blue Blinds Bakery is located just a block up from the water, where you can visit the recreation of the Mayflower, as well as Plymouth rock. Its a perfect weekend day trip.

If you really focus, you can already smell the bread.
