Movie Musings: The Lost City

Back in December 2021, I went to the movie theater for the first time the whole pandemic. I saw Steven Spielberg's remake of West Side Story and it sparked so much joy.

When I saw the trailer for The Lost City, co-starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, I decided that I would brave the outside world once again to see this on the big screen.

The Lost City

If you haven't seen the trailer, Sandra Bullock stars as Loretta Sage, a romance novelist. After the death of her husband, she's lost her mojo and is dreading going on her book tour.

She's joined on stage at all of her appearances by the model who graces the cover of her books, Alan. Alan is played by Channing Tatum.

Loretta and Alan are leaving a book tour stop when Loretta gets kidnapped by billionaire Abigail Fairfax, played by Daniel Radcliffe. Yes, Harry Potter is in this movie.

Fairfax is in search of the "red crown" described in Loretta's latest book. He knows that her late husband was an archeologist and he thinks that she'll be able to lead him to the treasure.

What follows is a fast-paced, fun and utterly hilarious jungle adventure. I can't remember the last time I laughed this hard and this often in a movie.

Without giving too much away, Brad Pitt has about a fifteen minute cameo in the film that is absolutely brilliant. Does he need to do movies like this? Probably not. Did he have a blast shooting this? I am positive he did.

As you can likely guess, there is some chemistry that builds between Loretta and Alan (Bullock and Tatum). Towards the end, there's a scene where they dance together and it made me want to rewatch Step Up the second I got home.

The movie clocks in at one hour and 52 minutes. I only looked at the time once (mostly because I didn't want to leave to go pee).

If you need a mood booster, The Lost City will do it! I am glad I saw it on the big screen; it made the jungle setting feel larger than life.
