One of my New Year's resolutions for 2022 is to make takeout fun again by trying as many donuts as possible. I have been wanting to check out the Donut King in Weymouth, MA for about two years. I pass it every time I drive to or from my house in Hull, but there always seems to be a reason why I can't stop in that particular moment.
This weekend, I woke up early on Saturday morning to drive down to Hull ahead of the February school vacation traffic. I got off the highway in Weymouth at around 9:15am and decided that this would be my moment!
Donut King has a few parking spots out front and a big lot around back. Places with free parking spark joy.
I opened the door, unsure what to expect, and found myself at the end of a line that was snaking around the entire parameter of the shop. There were several dads and their sons, who had all just come from the same youth hockey game.
I waited in line for about 10 minutes, which gave me plenty of time to strategize on my donut picks. I have been following @donutkingweymouth on Instagram for a long time, so I already had a sense for the current specialty flavors.
I chose four different kinds. #YOLO.
The kind woman who was working at the register gently placed them into this branded box. It's like she could sense they were about to be photographed.
The first one I tasted was the Fruity Pebbles donut. The donut itself was light and fluffy and the frosting was strawberry flavored, which gave each bite a nice little zip. The cereal on top was clearly fresh and offered a nice crunch in contrast to the pillowy donut. I used to love Fruity Pebbles as a kid, so this was a major nostalgia moment.
Next, I cut into the chocolate frosted donut with sprinkles. This one had the same light, fluffy base as the Fruity Pebbles donut, but topped with a very rich frosting. The chocolate flavor was so strong that it almost tasted like it had a hint of espresso.
The s'mores donut was next. How I could I resist this flavor option? The top of the donut had the same chocolate frosting as the one before, but this time it was topped with lightly torched marshmallows (an expert touch), one piece of Graham cracker and a single square of Hershey's chocolate. If you decide to get this one when you visit, definitely plan to share it with someone because it's very decadent, even for me!
My fourth and final pick was the coconut cake donut. I hate to say it, but this one was my least favorite and one I probably won't order again. Though I love coconut, the donut itself was dense and dry (a terrible combo). I think if you dunked it in coffee or cocoa, it would probably be a yummy compliment.
One thing I learned while standing in line at Donut King is that they serve much more than donuts. In fact, most of the people who ordered ahead of me got breakfast sandwiches for their entire family. They also sell lottery tickets, which made me chuckle.
If you're headed to the South Shore, definitely make time to stop at Donut King for a treat. They are located at 411 Middle Street, Weymouth, MA 02189.
