Stream: 6 Shows to Watch this Weekend

It's week four of quarantine here in Boston and let me tell you, I am streaming up a storm! Netflix can't keep up with my consumption.

Each Friday I have been sharing recommendations for what to watch over the weekend. In case you missed any of the previous lists:

Let's kick off with two shows I just finished this week, then I'll share some oldie but goodie picks too!

1. Elite (Netflix) - One of my best friends has been pushing me to watch Elite for over a year. It's basically Gossip Girl meets Pretty Little Liars.

Elite

The show was shot in Spain, in Spanish, and they've dubbed it for the US audience. While that may seem annoying, after the first 10 minutes, you don't even notice it anymore.

The story is set in a very wealthy, private high school. There's fierce competition in class, sibling rivalry, absentee parents and some very steamy romances (not safe to watch with kids in the room!).

Each episode ends on a cliffhanger and I found myself saying, "Ok, one more!" every single time. There are three seasons on Netflix. Each season is eight episodes and each episode is one hour long.

2. Unorthodox (Netflix) - Last weekend, every friend I talked to on FaceTime or Zoom asked me, "Have you watched Unorthodox yet?" The show is based on Deborah Feldman's book, Unorthodox: The Scandalous Rejection of My Hasidic Roots

I have not read the book and didn't know there was a show until nearly everyone in my life was raving about it! So, I sat down to stream the first episode and I wound up watching all four episodes in one sitting.

Unorthodox

Shira Haas, plays Esty, a 19-year-old woman escaping her life in Brooklyn, NY. She flees her religious community and loveless marriage, flying to Berlin, Germany to start over.

Most of the dialogue is in Yiddish with subtitles. Don't let that deter you! The story is gripping and will have you asking every few minutes, "But wait, is she going to be ok?"

3. Parenthood (Hulu) - If you miss being around your big, boisterous family, hunker down with the Bravermans. Parenthood is a show I have re-watched, in full, about five times. It's the story of four siblings, raising their families in Berkley, CA.

The cast is unreal: Craig T. Nelson, Peter Krause, Lauren Graham, Dax Shepard, Joy Bryant, Monica Potter, Erica Christensen, Mae Whitman and more.

Parenthood

All six seasons are available to stream on Hulu.

4. Jane the Virgin (Netflix) - Another family I love, the Villanuevas! Jane the Virgin stars Gina Rodriguez as Jane, a young woman in the center of a love triangle (one of the best in TV history). The show is telenovela-style, so it has crazy plot twists.

Jane the Virgin

My favorite character is Jane's father, Rogelio, a telenovela actor who is obsessed with his Twitter following.

This show will make you laugh, swoon and sometimes cry. The entire series is available on Netflix.

5. How I Met Your Mother (Hulu) - If you never got into this show when it aired live, now is the ideal time to watch. This is Neil Patrick Harris in his prime, as playboy Barry Stinson. His gaggle of friends are played by Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel.

How I Met Your Mother

All these years later, the jokes still hold up. Plus, it's fun to try and guess who "the mother" is!

6. Molly's Game (Netflix) - Closing out this week's picks with a movie that just hit Netflix, Molly's Game starring Jessica Chastain. Here is my original review

Mollys Game

The script is written by Aaron Sorkin and tells the story of Molly Bloom, a woman who came to run one of the most powerful poker rings in the world.

It's based on real-life events, which makes it even more interesting! Highly recommend.

There you have it, this week's watch list. I'll be back next Friday with another round of suggestions!
