For me, one of the best things about traveling somewhere new is the research you get to do beforehand. There's something thrilling about falling down the rabbit hole and discovering all of the fun possibilities that await you.
In the months leading up to our trip, we scoured the internet for the top recommendations on what to see, do, and of course, eat! Elite Daily published a piece titled, "7 Things To Do In Curacao That You Absolutely Can't Miss Out On," and on that list was a restaurant called Number Ten Curacao. I started poking around their website, breakfast and lunch menus and their Instagram account, @numbertencuracao. With every click I became more certain we had to experience it.
Number Ten Curacao is on the outskirts of Willemstad (much more about that area in an upcoming post) and it took us about 45 minutes to get there from where we were staying in St. Willibrordus. The restaurant is just off of a main road, practically on the exit ramp. I could see that on Waze, so thankfully we didn't drive right by it, but it would be super easy to miss the turn into their parking area.
The restaurant offers free parking (score!) and most of the spots are beneath the shade of trees. Though the exterior doesn't look like much, once you walk through that first archway, prepare to be amazed.
Number Ten Curacao has four big, beautiful indoor dining rooms, an outdoor patio and a yard in the back with swings.
The room we were seated in reminded me of Central Perk on FRIENDS.
From our chairs, we could see into the next room, which had a bright pink dining room table, a stunning chandelier and a very fun gallery wall.
I had made a reservation online and they marked our table by spelling my name in Scrabble tiles. How cute!
To begin, we each ordered an ice cold beverage. Ice lattes for the girls and hibiscus tea for me.
The hibiscus tea was fantastic. It also came in the cutest glass mug which reminded me of a honeycomb. The girls raved about the ice lattes, calling them "delicious" and "super creamy." I loved that they came served in glassware with gold trim and garnished with a mini coconut macaroon. All three ladies recommended dipping your macaroon into the coffee for the most indulgent way to enjoy the cookie.
Now, when it came time to place our food order, we had a rather unpleasant experience. We had been left alone at our table for about 20 minutes before a server came over to see if we'd decided on what we'd like to have. The first one of us to speak requested the avocado smash (their version of avocado toast) and we were promptly informed the kitchen was entirely out of avocados.
After driving 45 minutes to get to the restaurant, we were pretty pissed to discover that every menu item containing avocado was now off limits. We asked the server for a few minutes to think about what we'd like to have instead. I think we may have scared him, since he didn't return to the table for the rest of the time we were there!
After some serious pouting, we placed orders for four non-avocado dishes. The first to arrive was the spinach and cheese omelette with a side of brown bread.
My friend commented, "The omelette is great and this is definitely fresh spinach. The best part is the bread. I love seeded bread!"
Next to her, a friend ordered the acai bowl. It came is a gorgeous, ceramic bowl (we all wanted to take it home!).
When I asked how she was enjoying it, she replied, "This is a massive portion. They were very generous with the granola, almonds and fruit. All of the fruit is super fresh." She continued, "I will say, the acai itself is runnier than I am used to, but I would still order it again."
To my right, a friend had ordered the breakfast burrito. She's gluten-free and we learned that Number Ten Curacao offers gluten-free wraps, so that was a major score. The plate also included a generous fruit salad.
I went with a breakfast sandwich. It was an everything bagel (is there really any other kind?), egg, cheese, tomato and aioli, garnished with micro greens.
While I like all of these ingredients, the bagel was very thin and I found myself still hungry, even after I'd finished the whole sandwich. One of the girls took pity on me and when she ordered a second coffee, gave me her coconut macaroon.
In case you were wondering, the hot coffees are just as beautiful as the iced ones!
When we asked for the check, it arrived with a dish of gum drops for each of us. Another fun touch.
Number Ten Curacao is an undeniably beautiful space. They have fun, whimsical decor and for the most part, very friendly staff.
That said, everything there took forever. The service was slow and there isn't a dedicated waiter or waitress for each table. Because of that, they lose track of who has been attended to (or not).
As I mentioned before, we were definitely bummed they were out of avocado. They also turned out to be out of sourdough bread.
Despite the hiccups we experienced, I still would recommend the restaurant. My advice? Have a snack right before you go!
