Emmy Awards 2018: Viewing Party

There was something peculiar about the Emmy Awards this year . . . the show was on a Monday night. The horror!

One of the best things about awards shows is that they are typically on Sundays, providing the perfect distraction from Sunday Scaries (or as I call it, Sunday night dread). But on an even more practical level, the Sunday timing allows me (and my chef) an entire weekend day to get ready before the viewing party begins. Without that built-in prep time, we had to change things up a bit. I did almost all of my set up on Sunday night, because I knew I'd be rushing home from work on Monday.

Whenever I begin decorating for one of these gatherings, I always start with the front door. When my guests arrive, I want them to feel excited from the second they step onto the front porch. For the Emmys, I put a cut out on the front door of a winner's envelope. I found this years ago at Party City.

My entry table has become a popular decor spot over the years. I was walking through the floral department of the grocery store when I spotted these red gerber daisies. While I usually gravitate towards roses, these gals were speaking to me.

I stood them up in gilded milk bottles that I found at HomeGoods.

The ottoman in the living room is typically candy central and that tradition continued. I put out Gummi Bears, Swedish Fish, M&Ms and Reese's Pieces in crystal bowls that I inherited when we packed up my grandmother's house last December. They have a leaf / lily pad shape that I really love.

I paired the leafy bowls with gorgeous paper napkins from Greentail Table in Newton, my go-to for entertaining supplies. The cork and gold coasters are J.Crew.

I covered the dining room table in a gold table cloth and a white and gold runner. Do not be afraid to layer!

In the center, I placed a candelabra I found on a treasure hunting adventure at Crompton Collective in Worcester, MA.

I created two small bouquets of red roses in square vases to rest on either side. Pro tip: when you pick out fresh flowers for an event, once you decide on a vase, cut the flowers to fit the height of that vase. So often I see people lift flowers out of the cellophane and plunk them straight into the vase. Cut them down to size, I beg you! Not only will they look more professionally arranged, but they will last longer because they won't droop.

On the sideboard I set up a drink station. One side for water (with festive straws, of course) and one side for wine. The tray on the right is also an item from my grandmother's house.

Finally, I transformed my bathroom for the occasion. When I threw a big party at my house for my golden birthday (29 on the 29th) my party planner, Dustin, said, to me, "You can't forget the bathroom. Everyone uses it, so it should feel just as special." I never forgot that.

On the right side of the sink I put two small vases of white and pink carnations. Though Charlotte York called carnations "filler flowers," I like them when they are cut short and they just kind of peek out over the top.

The gold vases are a Target find from years ago.

On the other side, I added hand towels (another Greentail Table gem) and a fresh bar of soap. The packaging on the soap reads, "You smell nice."

When the girls arrived at 7:00pm we noshed on veggies and hummus, cheese and crackers and the most delicious beet tzatziki dip from Sofra Bakery. For dinner we enjoyed Greek salad, followed by an unconscionable amount of candy.

I found this year's show to be a bit of a snooze. I thought Colin Jost and Michael Che were terrible hosts. Their jokes weren't funny and their bits with Maya Rudolph and Fred Armisen were awful. That said, I did enjoy watching some of my favorite women in Hollywood take the stage to claim their trophies: Amy Sherman-Palladino, Rachel Brosnahan, Claire Foy, Merritt Wever and Regina King. For me, the highlight of the whole night was Oscar director Glenn Weiss proposing to his girlfriend on stage.

Tell me, did you watch? Do you have a viewing party tradition?
