In February as I was preparing for my Miami trip, I asked a friend for her recommendations on what to download for the plane. This particular friend is a pop culture expert and I have loved every show, movie and book she has ever recommended to me. Whenever I question something she suggests, she fires back, "Have I ever steered you wrong?" Nope, not once.
For those Florida flights, she recommended I watch "Younger" a show that airs on TV Land. Yes, that very same network that reruns all those old sitcoms. I was skeptical, but she had texted me about a few episodes she thought I would really love so I decided to give it a whirl. I downloaded season one on iTunes.
I watched all of season one on the very first day I started. I watched five episodes on the plane and the remaining seven that night in bed.
*SPOILER ALERT! Do not read on if you don't want to know anything about the plot of this show.*
"Younger" stars Broadway star Sutton Foster as Liza, a forty year old divorcee struggling to get work. Before having her daughter, she worked in publishing, but now no one will hire her. How does she decide to solve this problem? My pretending to be twenty six to compete with the hoards of millennials applying for these positions.
Her imposter plan works and she finds herself working as the assistant to the head of marketing at Empirical Publishing, played by Miriam Shor. Her character, Diana Traut, is bossy, rude and deliciously judgmental.
At work, Liza meets the girl who will become her BFF, Kelsey, played by Hillary Duff. With Kelsey also comes her friend and roommate, Lauren, a hilarious sidekick who works in fashion and has the traditional, overbearing Jewish parents.
The best character on the show (and by best, I mean smoldering) is Liza's boyfriend, Josh. He is played by Nico Tortorella, the most gorgeous human being on the planet.
I am telling you, when I was watching those first episodes on the plane I was blushing so hard I thought my face was on fire. I now follow him on Instagram @nicotortorella. Warning, that account is definitely not safe for work.
As you'd expect, each episode follows Liza as she tries to navigate new situations while feigning being in her twenties. One particularly funny episode takes place at a Coachella-like music festival. Imagine doing that in your forties!
"Younger" just wrapped its second season last Wednesday. Season two brought with it a guest appearance from Matthew Morrison, a leak of Liza's age secret and a very dramatic finale.
Season one and season two are both available on demand, on the TV Land app and via iTunes. If you're asking yourself how big of a commitment it will be to catch up, each season has twelve 30 minute episodes.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going back to drooling over Nico's Instagram account.
