Golden Globe Awards 2016: Best and Worst Dressed

Last night the Golden Globes kicked off the 2016 awards season. This is my favorite time of year.

The Golden Globes are particularly fun for a few reasons:

1) They usually have a comedian host for the evening

2) They let the attendees drink, which often leads to hilarious speeches later in the night

3) It honors the best of television and movies so you get to see all your favorite starts in one place

The show last night was a bit of a disappointment. Ricky Gervais hit below the belt on multiple occassions, as expected. His exchange with Mel Gibson was particularly cringeworthy. Additionally, it felt like the winners of most categories were unknown or total underdogs. While it's fun to see new people break through (like Gina Rodriguez last year), this year it felt like the Hollywood Foreign Press threw darts at a board to pick the winners.

No matter what happens during the awards show broadcast, you can always count on the red carpet for inspiration and a few gasps. Each year I settle into the same corner of my couch and tune in with glee as the stars begin to exit their limos. I usually watch a full two hours of the carpet and then the complete show broadcast before determining who will make my annual list of the best and worst dressed. You have to see how the gowns look on stage, you know?

Without further ado, here is my list of the 2016 Golden Globe Awards best and worst dressed.

BEST DRESSED

1) Taraji P. Henson - When Taraji sauntered onto my TV screen last night it was hard to see where she ended and Cookie Lyon began, because they felt like one person. Taraji was wearing a white, strapless Stella McCartney dress that fit her like a glove. She worked it for the camera and demanded additional time once she was on stage accepting her trophy. Last night she was all swagger.

2) Queen Latifah - I have seen Queen Latifah on many a red carpet and she has never looked this good. She sparkled from head to toe. Her hair was straight and a warm, honey hue. She donned twinkling earings and rocked the beaded neckline of her robin's egg blue Badgley Mischka gown.

3) Malin Akerman - This photo doesn't do Malin's look justice. This ice blue dress was a perfect match for her blond hair and angelic skin tone. Her hair and makeup was perfection. The dress shined as she walked and the peplum waist was wonderfully flattering.

4) Michael Fassbender - I love classic Hollywood glamour and Michael Fassbender personified the good old days in his Tom Ford tux.

5) Emmy Rossum - It takes an incredibly fit and confident woman to wear a dress that is essentially one singular, unforgiving piece of bright red fabric, but Emmy Rossum makes it look easy. She paired her Armani Prive dress with an elegant necklace, a simple clutch and a red lip to match.

Now onto the "love to hate" portion, the worst dressed list.

WORST DRESSED

Let me begin by saying I love most of the people who are about to appear on this list. Their ranking here is more of a "I expected so much more from you" than a true "Are you kidding me?"

1) Bryce Dallas Howard - Bryce had the cutest conversation with Giuliana Rancic about how this is her first ever Golden Globes and how excited she was to present and then the camera panned over her entire outfit and I shuddered. Her Jenny Packham dress was just a total mess. Way too much going on, the colors were too dark and she paired it with earrings that were a completely different style.

2) Melissa McCarthy - I adore Melissa McCarthy and I think she's been looking gorgeous lately. I love her long, dark hair, but this gown looked like a giant, metallic trash bag.

3) Rachel McAdams - Again, a person I love so much, but this Lanvin dress looks like it was crafted from wallpaper in my grandparents' house.

4) Jane Fonda - I just finished watching all of "The Newsroom" and I was such a big fan of Jane Fonda's character. When I saw her on screen last night I shrieked. What is this? A giant doily?

5) Kate Hudson - Kate Hudson has every right to want to show off her body, but does it have to be a nude, three piece, sequin ensemble? Horrible. Just horrible. From far away she looked naked.

There are a few others that belong on this list, but I'm too Type A to have lists with uneven numbers, so I'll just mention them quickly: Channing Tatum (what was up with that greasy hair?), America Ferrara (mustard yellow, ick), Eva Longoria (embellishments on the pelvis? No.) and Kirsten Dunst (inappropriate cleavage).

Much like the awards show itself, last night's fashion was mostly a let down. Where is this year's Lupita Nyong'o?

Now that you've seen my list, tell me, who made your list of the best and worst dressed?

Agree on Kate Hudson's dress! I mean, what was that - it seemed like a 90's throwback with the choker and crop top. I loved Jenna Dewan Tatum and Jamie Alexander's dresses- that style (plunging v-neck with a full skirt) is beautiful!!!

Right! It looked like those 90s prom dresses with the crop top. I wanted to like Jenna Dewan Tatum's dress, but I really didn't. Viola Davis' dress was nearly identical.

I hated Channing Tatum's hair last night! Agree on Taraji/Cookie!

I could not get over Chan Chan's greasy mane! What was happening there?
