Movie Musings: Trainwreck

Last weekend I went with my BFF to see "Trainwreck" at the SuperLux in Chestnut Hill. I am telling you, there is no better way to see a movie. With our feet up in our luxurious leather recliners, we placed orders for cocktails and some snacks. I had the strawberry basil cocktail and it was superb.

I knew I wanted to see "Trainwreck" from the very first time I watched the trailer. I've been following Amy Schumer since she was on "Last Comic Standing" in 2007. Though her jokes are sometimes way too crass for my taste, I'm incredibly impressed by the career she's building.

*SPOILER ALERT! Do not keep reading if you don't want to know any details of the film.*

The opening scene of "Trainwreck" features two little girls sitting on the hood of a car while their dad tries to explain why he and their mother are getting divorced. He makes an analogy to their beloved dolls, "Girls, if someone told you that you could only play with one doll for the rest of your life, that would be upsetting, wouldn't it?" He ends his fatherly moment by asking the girls to repeat after him, "Monogamy is unrealistic."

Well, one of those little girls is Amy and she grows up to be the world's most non-committal dater. In fact, she has her one night stand routine down to a science.

While sleeping with all of New York, Amy also has a boyfriend on the side, Steven, played by wrestler John Cena. In their best scene together, Amy asks Steven to talk dirt to her and everything he says is related to working out and protein powder. I was laughing so hard I think I missed half the dialogue.

In this role, Amy's character is a writer at a men's magazine. Her boss, Dianna, is horrible and keeps assigning her stories she has no interest in writing. (Side note: Dianna is played by Tilda Swinton who usually looks incredibly masculine).

Dianna puts Amy on a story about a sports medicine doctor. Amy knows nothing about sports, so hilarity ensues. The doctor is played by "Saturday Night Live" veteran Bill Hader (a.k.a. Stefan). As you can surely guess, they fall for each other.

I'm not attracted to Bill Hader, so it was hard for me to get into the idea of these two as a couple, but there were definitely some sweet moments. I actually think the scenes where they fought were even better than their gushing scenes.

As with every romantic comedy, about 75% of the way in, the couple has to have a huge blow out and break up (only to get back together). Amy woos Aaron back with two bold movies - a feature in Vanity Fair confessing what an ass she was and a routine with the Knicks City Dancers, which is the undisputed best scene in the whole movie. Amy has the girls choreograph moves to Aaron's favorite song, Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl." It reminded me of the closing scene of "Pitch Perfect" where Beca puts "The Breakfast Club" song into their mashup for Jesse.

In addition to Amy and Bill, the movie also had a slew of guest stars, starting with the one and only Lebron James. Lebron plays himself as one of Aaron's patients and his best friend. He was surprisingly funny. Especially when he confronts Amy and asks, "What are your intentions?"

Daniel Radcliffe also makes an appearance in a movie inside the movie called "The Dog Walker." So random!

I was also happy to see Mike Birbiglia as Amy's brother-in-law. Last October I saw his stand up act here in Boston. In addition to being hilarious, he's also humble.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize Judd Apatow directed this movie until the credits rolled. I love his unwavering support of women in comedy.

Overall, I give "Trainwreck" a B. I laughed hard in a few scenes and blushed through the entire dance number at the end, but I don't feel like I ever need to watch it again.

Did you see it? What did you think?
