Grey's Anatomy: The Carousel

Two weeks ago Derek died and we all questioned whether or not we'd still continue watching Grey's Anatomy.

Last week, that pivotal episode was followed by a two hour show. Sadly, I didn't get to watch live because I was traveling for work.

This week, you get a triple recap - three hours of Grey's!

Last week:

The two hour episode opened with a clip from last week, when Meredith is sitting next to Derek as they unhook him from life support. That scene is spliced with flashbacks to when Ellis and Richard (the Chief) broke up. As Meredith sits next to Derek's hospital bed and struggles to speak, we hear Ellis' voice in her head.

Meredith returns to the hospital and can barely tell our gang what has happened. She winds up fainting after she says aloud, "Derek is dead." Amelia is not in the room with the rest of the doctors, so Owen winds up telling her one-on-one. She has a surprisingly stoic reaction.

Soon after, Meredith disappears. She packs up the kids in the middle of the night and leaves. In her wake is a two sentence note. Alex calls her repeatedly for months and on Thanksgiving Day (a good 8 months later) she finally answers and says, "I'm fine. The kids are fine. Please stop calling."

Right at the one hour mark of the two hour episode we discover that Meredith is pregnant! Is it Derek's baby? Did she meet someone new? Shonda, you got me again!

Back at the hospital, Owen and April leave for medical duty abroad. Jackson begs April not to go, but she persists. Right around Christmas, Jackson and April are talking via FaceTime when gun fire goes off in the background. Seconds later, April's connection drops.

This episode there were two main patient stories. The first revolved around officer Dan Pruitt, who Callie treated months ago (and went on a date with). When Callie tells him he has a long recovery ahead, he adorably replies, "That means you'll have that much more time to fall in love with me."

Several weeks later, while he's on the mend, Dan says to Callie, "I think that I was meant to meet you. That first date sucked, but that got me to you. And I needed you. I couldn't have survived this without you. So thank you." Awwww, officer Dan!

The other primary patient story centered around a burn victim, Anne. In the first few days of her recovery, her husband is overwhelmed by all the procedures and storms out. About six months later, he tells her "this isn't what I signed up for" and he walks out. Anne bonds with her hospital roommate, J.J., who keeps everything positive and light. Sadly, on New Year Day, J.J. passes away, leaving Anne all alone.

In the last few minutes, Catherine Avery declares her love for the Chief in front of the whole hospital (this is after she turned down his marriage proposal earlier in the hour). He responds by quipping, "It's about damn time!"

At the close of the episode, Meredith gives birth to a baby girl and names her Ellis.

The hospital called Alex (Mer's emergency contact) and he finally sees her after nearly a year away. Alex brings Mer and the kids back to Seattle and back to the dream house.

Eventually, Meredith returns to the hospital for work. She finds Derek's white coat with his ferry boat scrub cap in the pocket. She puts it on her head and walks into her first surgery back on the job.

A fitting end, I must say.

This week:

First of all, the beginning 29 minutes of the episode were cut off by a live feed of New England Patriots quarterback, Tom Brady, speaking at Salem State.

When the show resumed, the doctors were lying on the ground trying to help a man trapped under a car. It seemed there had been some kind of major car accident or pile up.

Back at the hospital, Amelia confronts Meredith in the supply closet about Derek's death. She wanted to know why Meredith never called her. She barks, "How could you unplug him without letting me know? Because of you, I didn't get to say goodbye." Ouch.

Later on, Arizona, Callie and Stephanie help a woman deliver her baby in the hospital elevator, all while trying to keep her dislocated spine secure.

Though I missed the first half hour of the episode (thanks, #deflategate) I have pieced together a few things:

1) The Chief and Catherine have postponed their wedding
2) Owen is resigning
3) Meredith is moving back into her childhood house (where Alex and Jo currently live)

In the previews for next week they announced the upcoming episode will be the season finale. I'm happy to hear that because I don't know how much more I can take!
