Rental Review: St. Vincent

As much as I keep wishing for it to be spring, the Boston weather seems to be holding onto winter for dear life. With the chilly temps, it's hard to be motivated to leave the house. Solution? Netflix. Or in this case, Redbox.

I have a Redbox at my grocery store and every week I get emails telling me what new DVDs are arriving. When I saw the Bill Murray movie St. Vincent was in, I decided to pick it up on my next shopping trip.
I had not wanted to spend the money to see St. Vincent in the theater because it didn't seem like the kind of movie you need to see on the big screen. As it turns out, it's a good thing I didn't see it in public, since I spent the last five minutes of the movie in tears.
For those who aren't familiar, Bill Murray plays Vincent, a man with an ailing wife, living alone in squalor. He smokes, he drinks and he bets too much at the track.
One day, Vincent's life is interrupted by the arrival of his new next door neighbors, Maggie and Oliver. Maggie is played by Melissa McCarthy and her son Oliver is played by Jaeden Lieberher.
This was an interesting role for Melissa McCarthy as it had zero comedy. The character of Maggie is an exasperated single mom who spends most of her time stressed out or yelling.
Hollywood newcomer Jaeden Lieberher brings a naiveté to Oliver that is the perfection juxtaposition to Vincent the curmudgeon. Together they form an unlikely bond that delivers the best scenes in the film.
At the end of the movie, I was a blubbering mess when Oliver shares his friendship with Vincent with his whole class at school. The ever adorable Chris O'Dowd plays his teacher, which just made it all the better.
Though I was skeptical about St. Vincent, by the end of the movie I was so glad to have seen it. Tissues and all.
Tell me, have you rented or downloaded anything good lately?
