Grey's Anatomy: New Beginnings

Hello, Grey's fans! Last week I was on a flight to Miami during the new episode, so this week you get a double recap. Off to Seattle we go!

Last week:

When we last left off, Derek showed up at Meredith's front door (well, his front door too) and I think we were all pretty sure he cheated on her.

Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Derek had a research fellow in D.C. named Renee who was into him. She wants to cure autism because her sister had it and she feels a deep passion for understanding the roots of the disease.

Derek becomes very invested in Renee and her research. One night, over the microscope, they are standing just a few inches apart when he says, "Keep going. You're right at the line. You're gonna cross it. Don't stop." Oh hey, sexual connotations.

At that exact moment it seems like Derek wants to kiss her. His feet are firmly planted to the ground. Then when he finally turns to leave, Renee takes his hand and they share a kiss. Oh come on, Derek!

Clearly affected by Derek's return and all the turmoil, Meredith loses her first patient, ending the 89 positive outcomes streak.

Also at the hospital, Amelia and Owen keep growing closer. I have been saying this for weeks, but I hate them together.

That same day, Owen's mother is brought into the hospital after falling in the shower. She is driven to the hospital by what seems to be a young, handsome EMT. Turns out, it's her boyfriend.

Owen's mother tries to defend her relationship to Owen and says, "When he kissed me, we were the same age." Owen protests and tries to get his mother to see that she's being scammed. She replies, "There's no way he could love someone like me? Is that what you were going to say?" Talk about a heartbreaking moment.

Across the hospital, Wilson is helping a woman with a leech up her nose. My skin is crawling just thinking about it again. The scene where Wilson tries to coax out the leech only to be slapped across the face by the nervous patient was pretty funny.

At the close of the hour, Derek confronts Meredith about the weirdness between them. He recites a monologue only Shonda Rhimes could write. "I am calling post it. Zola and Bailey and tumors on the walls and ferry boat scrub caps. I thought D.C. was everything and I was wrong. You. You. You're everything. I love you. And I'm not going to stop loving you. Meredith, I can't live without you. I don't want to live without you. And I'm going to do everything in my power to prove it."

"I can live without you," Meredith says. She then pauses for a painfully long time. Just long enough for us to imagine them breaking up and the past 10 years not being worth it. Then she continues, "But I don't want to. I don't ever want to." Thank goodness!

With Meredith and Derek recommitted to each other, the previews show us the first week of Derek back at Seattle Grace full time and a reinvigorated rivalry between him and Amelia. As the show runners call it, a Shepherd showdown.

Last night:

This week's episode opened on the Chief with a group of elementary school students. He is taking them around the hospital for the day, meeting the doctors in each specialty. Avery introduces the kids to the "Plastics Posse" while Arizona refers to the babies she operated on in utero as "healthy little pop tarts." Alex winds up winning the class over with his gross x-rays of nails sticking out of skulls and coffee cans in people's abdomens.

The major patient story of the night involved three cops shot during a bank robbery. Two come in with serious injuries and one who is mostly fine. We soon find out the two critically injured officers are brothers - Brett and Pete.

After multiple attempts to save them, Pete is brain dead and Brett suffers a massive stroke during surgery. Meanwhile, one of the shooters from the robbery, a fifteen year old boy, comes in with multiple gun shot wounds. Faced with needing an organ transplant to survive, Bailey decides to ask the mother of the two deceased police officers if she would consider donating their organs. Bailey is usually so emotionally in tune, this felt very out of whack.

With the help and persuasion of one of Brett and Pete's fellow officers, their mother does decide to donate their organs. After the surgery, Bailey and Meredith tell their mother that "37 people got to go home to their families today because of your sons. Here is a list of 100 people who got second chances today because of your sons." Get the tissues!

At the end of the night, the only surviving officer, Dan, says to Callie, "If today weren't today. If it was any other day, like, you know, a regular day, I would ask if you'd like to have dinner with me." Aww. How cute is he? Also, would Callie be open to dating a man again?

Also on the dating front, Stephanie asks out one of the school trip chaperones. Turns out he's 17 years old and a junior in high school. As a fellow single person with eyes of desperation, I can completely understand how this happened.

In the final scene of the hour, Derek and Amelia have a heart to heart at the house. I hate the tension between them, but last night they were actually nice to each other. Progress.

In previews for next week, apparently the first ever Grey's episode will air at 8:00pm, followed by the new episode at 9:00pm.

The new show will focus on the budding romance between Owen and Amelia. Barf.
