Grey's Anatomy: Post-it Notes and Tumors

Last week I was traveling for work on Thursday, so I wasn't able to watch the winter premiere of "Grey's." I've caught up and now we can talk about two week's worth of Seattle drama at once!

Last week:

In the opening scene of the episode Derek is packing to move to D.C. While he loads up his suitcase, he keeps looking at the framed post-it above their bed. Later on, after he's left, Meredith takes down the post-it and puts it in the trash. The horror!

Most of the episode centers around a trauma at the hospital with over 25 patients. A woman drove off a bridge with her two children in tow and they almost drowned. She hit several other cars along the way, causing the pile up.

During all that chaos, Avery and Kepner get in a screaming match about their ultrasound. Avery has told Hunt that Kepner shouldn't be operating and she goes postal. I am so tired of watching people fight on this show!

Up in neurology, Arizona has brought all of Dr. Herman's records to the She Shepard and she thinks she can remove the brain tumor.

For most of the episode, Dr. Herman resists the help, but finally, after a tearful breakdown alone in a bathroom, she comes around to hearing the surgical approach. Is it just me, or do you not care about this Dr. Herman character at all?

In the OR, Meredith has been operating on the woman who drove off the bridge and suspects she has a tumor on her pancreas, which would explain all her symptoms. After hours on the table, they do finally find the tumor. Meredith is feeling victorious.

Then, she remembers she has a nanny candidate waiting in the lobby. Meredith completely breaks down to this woman and says all the things she should have said to Derek, including her famous line, "I need a person."

Later, post-meltdown, Meredith calls Derek and tells him she wants to work it out. Just before he steps on the plane, he asks, "Do I come home?" Meredith tells him to go and assures him they will work it out. She then lifts the post-it note out of the trash can. Thank goodness!

I have to say, I used to love "Grey's" for all the fun hook ups, the secret trysts and the boozy nights at Joe's. The show has completely lost its fun factor. It's all break ups and backstabbing now. I just don't know if I have the emotional energy to watch a show that doesn't have any silver linings.

Last night:

This episode revolved around two tumors - one in a patient and the brain tumor plaguing Dr. Herman. Let's start with the patient. Meredith is treating a woman named Adrianne and is thinking her surgery will be pretty routine. Once on the operating table, it's clear her scans were out of date because the tumor had nearly tripled in size. The situation was so severe, Meredith stopped mid-surgery and closed so they could regroup.

While brainstorming approaches with Bailey and Pierce, Meredith has the bright idea to 3D print the tumor. It takes 10 hours, but once it's complete, all the surgeons rally together to come up with a plan. As they jotted down their ideas on the whiteboard, it felt like watch an old episode of "House." I used to love watching Dr. House and his team of eager residents try to solve really complex problems.

As a side note, while the doctors are waiting for the 3D tumor to print, they start talking about their sleeping patterns. Meredith suggests that she might 3D print a Derek to keep her company at night. Ha!

Across the hospital, She Shepard is preparing to operate on Dr. Herman's tumor. When she tries to get the residents excited to assist, they all think she's insane. That is until Stephanie has a lightbulb moment and earns a spot on the surgical team.

Outside the hospital, April and Jackson are trying to deal with the diagnosis of their baby, who is likely to be born with untreatable health problems. April's flies in her mom to help her cope with the situation. Her mother suggests going to church, which angers Jackson. In one of the final scenes of the hour, Dr. Herman appears to give April and Jackson an update and it doesn't look good. Dr. Herman simply says, "We have your test results."

Though given very little screen time, this episode also shows both Owen and Callie struggling to move on from their past relationships. Callie is hit on by a visiting tech rep and Owen continues to miss Cristina. He even goes down to the vent they used to stand on. So many important moments happened over that vent!

In previews for next week, it looks like the focus will be on April and Jackson. This story line is depressing me!
