The Mindy Project: Stolen

Last night's episode of "The Mindy Project" revealed two shocking truths: Danny's mom is a shoplifter and Danny is obsessed with "Top Gun."

Mindy takes Danny's mom shopping for a new bathing suit for her water aerobics class. While she's in line paying for all Annette's new stuff (toaster included) she spots Annette swiping a leather bomber jacket. More on that in a minute.

Just before that, Mindy had the most hilarious conversation with the store's cashier, one I can 100 percent relate to.

Cashier: Would you like to open a store credit card?
Mindy: I shouldn't. My credit is bad.
Cashier: We send you a fun email on your birthday . . .
Mindy: My social security number is 637-70 . . .

When I read Mindy Kaling's book, the first thing I identified with is her addiction to shopping. I love how that has become such a big part of her TV character.

Later on in the episode, Mindy confronts Annette about the stealing. She freaks out and calls Danny eight times until he picks up to rant about it. Once Danny gets involved, he tells Mindy they both have to go to his mother's house for dinner. He says, "You don't understand. You're dealing with Catholics now, ok? This is a guilt dinner. Which means she's going to torture you. Get ready to repent, Lahiri. Now go home and put on something black and modest." To which she replies, "The only thing I have that's all black is my Cat Woman costume. You know what? I'll just zip it all the way up to the top. And  . . . definitely underwear." Ha!

Fast forward to the dinner, where Danny is sitting in his mother's Staten Island dining room, wearing the bomber jacket at the table. Annette is ripping into Mindy when her BFF Dot (who is becoming more hysterical with every episode) says, "Mindy, I don't see how you come back from this."

In the final scene of the episode, Mindy downloads the "Top Gun" song in an attempt at a romantic gesture, but Danny is so excited about the tune that he practically knocks her over reenacting the moves from the film. I just can't.

The side story tonight was about Peter dating Tamra's best friend Abby, the romance novel writer. Peter is stunned by how chill and low maintenance Abby is. She says to him, "I'm like the Matthew McConaughey of the romance novel world." That's a sentence I never thought I'd hear.

When Peter arrives to the office and shares how much he's enjoying dating Abby, Jeremy jabs and says, "I really prefer to date women who challenge me." Peter then fires back, "Ohhhh. You know, I tried dating a woman like that, but she left me for you! So I think I'll stay on the track that I'm on."

In the end, Peter breaks up with Abby. I am wondering if the writers are making room for him to find a serious love interest.

What was your favorite moment of the episode? Danny wishing he was Tom Cruise? Annette in the Rihanna bathing suit?
