Last week "The Mindy Project" returned with an incredible season premiere. The next day at work all anyone could talk about was Diamond Dan.
Last night's episode? Not so much.
The half hour focused on Mindy's attempt to win over Danny's mother, Annette, played by Rhea Perlman of "Cheers" fame.
When Annette first meets Mindy at Danny's apartment, she mistakes Mindy for the cleaning lady. The next day when Annette apologies, Mindy replies, "It happens all the time. One Thanksgiving a boy thought I was the Dora the Explorer balloon."
The best scene in the whole episode is when Mindy crashes lunch with Danny, his brother, Annette and her best friend Dot. When the women sit down at the table for lunch, Annette says, "I forgot my glasses! Danny, could you read me the whole menu?" Without skipping a beat, Dot chimes in, "I forgot my hearing aid, so make it loud." Welcome to every single meal with my grandmother.
Though in-law story lines can be highly amusing, this episode didn't hit the mark. It felt forced. I much prefer when the writing focuses on the tension between uptight Danny and self-centered Mindy.
