Movie Musings: We're The Millers

Back in June I made my first trip to the Showcase SuperLux in Chestnut Hill. After one visit I was obsessed.

Looking for an excuse to go again, I convinced two of my guy friends that instead of having our usual get together (we always try to visit a new restaurant) we should do the SuperLux instead.

I wanted to see "Elysium," the new Matt Damon movie, but one of the boys had already seen it, so we decided on "We're the Millers" with Jason Sudeikis and Jennifer Aniston.

Let me begin by saying, I hated the movie. Had it not been for my cozy lounge chair and my delicious strawberry basil cocktail (thank you, SuperLux) I probably would have walked out.

The premise is that Jason Sudeikis plays David, a drug dealer who gets robbed of all his money and his pot stash. To save himself from being killed by his boss, he has to head to Mexico and smuggle drugs back over the border.

To do so, he forms a fake family comprised of total misfits. Jennifer Aniston's plays Rose, David's upstairs neighbor who works as a stripper. He also wrangles Casey (Emma Roberts) a homeless girl who hangs out on their block and finally, Kenny (Will Poulter) his downstairs neighbor who has been abandoned by his single mom. Do you hate it already?

Jennifer Aniston is completely unconvincing as a stripper. I know the men of America love her, but it was difficult to watch. Her best scenes are at the end of the movie when her character and Jason's character develop a sincere romantic chemistry.

For me, the stand out in the film was newcomer Will Poulter as Kenny. My favorite scene in the whole movie is when our faux family is traveling through Mexico in an RV and TLC "Waterfalls" comes on the radio. Kenny sings along and then busts out of the whole rap, full commitment. The entire theater was roaring with laughter.

I could see Will Poulter having a "McLovin" moment and starting to appear in more and more movies.

Though the movie was mostly a snooze, there were some great cameos by Ed Helms, Nick Offerman, Kathryn Hahn and Molly Quinn.

Rather than waste your money on "We're the Millers," save your pennies and stream this on Netflix in a few months when you need a really mindless brain break.

Did you see it? Are you with me?
