DIY: Bridesmaid Gift Boxes

I am very excited to share with you that the Galler family is celebrating a major life milestone, my little sister's engagement!

Back in June my younger sister got engaged to her boyfriend of eight years who we love and adore.

For years now I have been secretly hoping that when she got engaged she would ask me to be her maid of honor. While we were both home in Miami over July 4th weekend I overheard her say to my grandmother, "Obviously Molly will be my maid of honor." Like a hawk I swooped into the conversation and shouted, "What? What did you just say?" My sister smiled and said, "Well, you will be my maid of honor, won't you?"

While most people would have been bowled over and tearing up, I screeched, "This is not how you ask me!"

In my adult life I've been to over 20+ friend weddings. My sister, at the young age of 24, has been to about four. I politely explained to her that it is customary to formally ask your maid of honor and bridesmaids to be part of your big day with some type of gift - a hand written card, a dress shaped cookie, etc. I promptly exclaimed, "I want a re-do!"

When I went to visit my sister and her fiancé last week at their new apartment in New York City, my kid sister grinned and said, "I have something for you."

She presented me with this box:

I recognized the box immediately as one of my dad's cigar boxes. He is a serious cigar aficionado and my sister had requested a few of his best boxes to use as packaging for her bridal party presents. Very clever!

The box was wrapped with twine and had a gift card attached, decorated with a piece of sea coral.

When I opened the box I found an envelope. Inside was a stunning hand painted card by Verrier.

My sister had written a beautiful note which had me getting misty!

I was so obsessed with the card that I had to know where she found it. She confessed it came from Chelsea Market in New York City. If you can't get there, you can order from the Verrier Boutique online.

After reading the touching card I explored my gift box. My sister is getting married at The Palms Hotel in Miami, so many of the items were beach themed.

The contents of the box included:

  • Kleenex - Tissues for wedding day, as I am certainly going to cry. These weren't just any tissues, their plastic wrap is the exact color green of the logo of The Palms Hotel.
  • Chocolate covered pretzels - My sister's wedding colors are turquoise and coral, so I wasn't surprised to see these turquoise chocolate covered pretzels. They came garnished with a white chocolate sea shell. They are from the Pocasset Pretzel Co. and are super inexpensive!
  • Sunblock - Since we'll be spending a lot of wedding week lounging by the pool and tanning on the beach, have to have sunblock!
  • Lip balm - This Coconut Lip Butter from the Body Shop puts me into a tropical mood.
  • Nail polish - To get my nails and toes ready for the sunshine, she gifted me Essie's Turquoise & Caicos nail color. How perfect!

I took each item of the box and uncovered one final touch, a vintage postcard on the bottom!

These bathing beauties came from the gift shop at Miami's Coral Gables Museum.

Didn't she do such a great job?

In addition to mine, she created personalized boxes for each of the four other bridesmaids.

The wedding date is set for April 13, 2014 and I cannot wait to stand beside her as her maid of honor.

Have you been asked to be a bridesmaid in a clever or personal way?
