Dining Out: Sunbird

Yesterday I shared with you my trip to the Crush Pad food truck at Truro Vineyards and today I want to tell you about another food truck discovery I made while on the Cape called Sunbird.

Before I get into the details of the truck itself, I have to give mad props to the Sunbird team for one of the best websites I have ever seen. Not only is it visually gorgeous (hello, food porn), but it's clever, thoughtfully designed, mobile-optimized and expertly branded. In fact, you'll see their brilliant bird branding in every single aspect of their operation.

Ok, onto the truck!

The Sunbird truck has a permanent spot on Route 6 in Wellfleet, just before PJ's, the family friendly, fried food mecca.

Their spot is very well marked with a big, bright sign and a flag waving over the street.

Sunbird has their own parking lot, so once you pull off Route 6 you can tuck your car safely at the back of the lot.

The truck is parked just a few feet off of the road, but has a whole outdoor patio set up, just like a full blown restaurant.

Across the top of the truck the paint reads, "Eat Well . . . On The Fly." Yet another great bird reference!

The truck's menu is scrawled across a chalkboard on the left side of the window. Once you decide what you're having, you just saddle up to the window and give your order.

Every inch of the Sunbird space is carefully decorated with their signature bird, even the back of the truck! Rather than let the truck hitch look unsightly, the Sunbird team made the back of the truck bloom with an array of potted plants.

Around front, just beyond the window, are Sunbird's tomato plants, accented with three orange parasols. So cute!

As you walk behind the truck toward the seating, you come to the prep area - water, napkins, utensils, etc.

That table also offers a box of books for some light reading while you enjoying your meal.

Sunbird has several seating options including this love bench. I feel like this belongs on a beach in the Caribbean or Europe.

The fun seating choices continue at the back, like these two low chairs. Notice the cool mural that says "EAT."

We sat a butter yellow picnic table that had a pot of succulents as a centerpiece. My sister, who is planning her wedding, was very into this arrangement.

There are a few fun drinks choices at the truck, we opted for root beer and lemonade.

My dad and my sister each ordered the fish tacos which came in a corn tortilla. My sister said, "The tortillas were very fresh, but the taco needed more acidity. I squeezed the juice out of my entire lime and it still wasn't enough." My dad added, "It really needed more dressing."

My mom was bold and decided to try the hard boiled duck egg. She loved it and said, "This was just remarkably refreshing. The greens for garnish really completed the dish."

The only vegetarian entree on the Sunbird menu is the salad special and they day we visited they were already sold out at 1:00pm. I asked the owner what she could for me since I don't meat and she offered to alter their usual breakfast sandwich by substituting grilled eggplant for the bacon.

To be honest, I think I had the best meal! My sandwich was served on doughy, toasted bread and packed with grilled eggplant, a fried egg, scallions and citrus mayo. When I bit into it and the yolk broke, it was heaven. I completely inhaled the sandwich.

Though our food at Sunbird was quite delicious, it did take a long time to come out. There were only three people in front of us, but we waited nearly 20 minutes for our food. That wouldn't be long in a restaurant, but at food truck, that's too long to wait.

I should also mention, Sunbird does not have a bathroom. If you need to use the facilities you have to walk along Route 6 to the Cumberland Farms that is just a short walk away. Not ideal, but in a pinch, you could do it.

Before leaving, we stopped at the ARTichoke truck, which was parked right next to Sunbird. I don't know if you remember, but I first met the ARTichoke girls when they were parked in Government Center in downtown Boston. I loved them at first sight and it was great to visit them in their hometown!

My sister bought a tank top and I bought a t-shirt and a tea towel for my kitchen. I'm obsessed with their stuff!

If you're heading to the Outer Cape before the summer ends, Sunbird is a very fun lunch spot. Though the choices are limited and it takes a bit to get served, once you have that first bite, you'll be a member of the Sunbird flock.
