Explore: Cool Globes

A few weeks before I went to Israel in May, a friend of mine who lives in Jerusalem posted pictures of a very unique looking art installation. I was intrigued and looked through all of her mobile uploads on Facebook before I began peppering her with questions. She let me know the installation is called Cool Globes and it's actually traveling the world.

Guess what? It's next stop is . . . Boston!

Cool Globes uses large scale globe sculptures to share ways you can conserve, reduce, reuse and recycle to help save our planet.

In Jerusalem the exhibit is located in a plaza between the Jaffa Gate of the Old City and the Mamila outdoor shopping mall.

The globes are set up in a straight line, each one with a plaque explaining its area of focus.

The first globe is decorated with the names of cities across the world, sprinkled with butterflies.

The next is about the importance of plant life. As you can see, each continent is decorated with a few indigenous plants.

Globe number three addresses how to reduce your carbon footprint.

Can you see the footprints on each yellow stripe?

Using a polar bear as an example, the fourth globe showed little ways you can change your behavior for the greater good.

In the first row, the last globe talked about alternatives to transportation - walking, running or riding your bike in place of driving your car.

Once you reach the end of the first row of globes, when you look back, you see all the sculptures and the walls of the Old City. It was pretty gorgeous.

In row two, the first globe featured animal life and the importance of maintaining natural ecosystems.

This globe was one of my favorites. The reduce, reuse, recycle globe. It's made from all recycled materials!

This extra shiny globe details the specifics of using solar power. The silver paint was so hot to the touch!

As we made our way through the exhibit, the view just got better and better.

The marine biology globe looked like a giant, round fishbowl.

The last globe was one of the most visually interesting.

It encouraged visitors to think about all of the ways they can impact the planet positively.

What was super cool was that this globe had roots, just like a tree. Look down beneath the orb. So awesome!

If you'd like to see the Cool Globes in person, they are arriving in Boston on August 15th! Get all the details here.
