Dining Out: Sandwich

While on vacation in Israel in May I spent a fun day exploring Tel Aviv with my aunt and cousin. For lunch that day we went to a place called Sandwich. My cousin's boyfriend discovered it in a magazine called Blazer, the Israeli equivalent of Maxim.

The restaurant space is narrow with a bar taking up the majority of the room.

The ceiling is lined with oversized, exposed light bulbs.

Along the right wall is the famous "Lunch atop a Skyscraper" photograph, doctored to include the Tel Aviv skyline in the background. How cool!

Sandwich has one long picnic table out front on the sidewalk and we snagged it. Sandwich only has Hebrew menus so I had to have my cousin translate every option for me.

Our waitress brought us a small dish of olives of to nosh on while we looked over the menu.

We were also delivered a plate of bread accompanied by cauliflower topped with tahini. That is a lot of white food!

After placing our orders, the food came out quickly. My cousin went with the turkey sandwich, which served on a baguette and stuffed to the brim!

I love the purple and white polka dot trays.

I ordered a sandwich with feta cheese, tomato jam and arugula. It was fantastic! It was like a Greek salad between two pieces of sesame bread.

My aunt ordered a salad topped with all kinds of goodies - hard boiled egg, sun dried tomato, sunflower seeds and more.

We also had a friend join us for this meal and he ordered a lamb dish topped with whipped, warm tahini.

At Sandwich they don't do potato chips or French fries on the side, they do whole baked potatoes. Yowzah!

My friend decided to scoop a few spoonfuls of his lamb onto the baked potato. A truly excellent idea.

Sandwich is a great place to stop and refuel while exploring Tel Aviv. The food is super fresh and the portions are huge.

After our lunch, we walked through the neighborhood of Neve Tzedek and down to the beach.

People were swimming, playing frisbee and skipping stones.

As we walked along the boardwalk we saw a man on his bicycle looking out over the water. From far away it looked like he might cycle right into the ocean.

Toward the end of the boardwalk there was some very cool graffiti including this mural, designed to look like the Last Supper, but starring famous Israeli leaders.

All over Tel Aviv there is cool graffiti. In fact, I am told there are graffiti tours you can take. On my next trip, I definitely want to do that.

The next post I will share with you from my Israel trip will transport you to the most gorgeous outdoor patio. You'll surely be inspired to throw a garden party!
