Movie Musings: This Is The End

Yesterday I shared with you my awesome experience at the Showcase SuperLux in Chestnut Hill, but what I didn't tell you was what movie we saw!

When deciding which flick to pick we wanted something entertaining, but also something that we wouldn't be upset if we missed parts because we were too obsessed with the SuperLux experience.

I have to admit, when we sat down for "This Is The End," the new Seth Rogen movie, I had very low expectations. I assumed it would be just another stoner movie.

I am shocked yet thrilled to report that the movie was hilarious! In the film, Seth Rogen plays himself. The opening scene has him waiting at LAX for the arrival of his best friend, Jay. Jay hates Seth's new Hollywood friends, but begrudgingly agrees to go with Seth to a party at James Franco's house.

Within the first 10 minutes of the movie there is an explosion of celebrity cameos: Rihanna, Jason Segel, Michael Cera, Kevin Hart, Aziz Ansari, Emma Watson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse (also known as McLovin) and more. For those who saw the movie, I think we can all agree Michael Cera had the scene-stealing moment.

At about minute 20, the party is ruined by the arrival of the apocalypse.

I know, I know. Stay with me.

Seth, Jay, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride lock themselves into James' house to stay safe from whatever is wreaking havoc outside. The lockdown antics that ensue are laugh out loud hysterical.

Not to be crass, but the argument between James Franco and Danny McBride about masturbation habits had the entire theater in stitches.

Even when the movie goes totally off the rails and a giant monster appears to gobble them up, you find yourself into it. The writing is spot on and delivers punch lines when you least expect it.

SPOILER ALERT!

The best part of the movie, without question, is when Seth and Jay arrive in heaven only to discover heaven is a place where the Backstreet Boys perform. I can't remember a time I smiled so wide during a movie scene.

"This Is The End" is clearly the result of actors who have enough money to do whatever they want. Feel like writing a movie about the apocalypse starring all your friends? Sure! Fortunately for all of us, the result of this hobby project is comedic genius.
