Sugar Fix: Economy Candy

While in New York City I took a daytime trip to the Lower East Side for some shopping. Admittedly, before this outing I had only been to this neighborhood between the hours of 12am - 4am.

With my childhood friend as my guide, we bopped around the neighborhood and found ourselves at the entrance to a New York institution, Economy Candy.

The Economy Candy store has been open since 1937. In an homage to their heritage, they keep an old fashion candy cart out front.

Inside, the store is a total madhouse. There are people everywhere and each person is hopped up on sugar.

In addition to the walls and shelves packed miles high with treats, there are also toys hanging from the ceiling like this cherry red tricycle.

At the front of the store there is a scale used to weigh bags of candy. These people mean business!

Across from the scale is a wall of PEZ dispensers! I confess, I used to love PEZ.

For those who like their sugar in a simpler form, choose from 20 varieties of candy sticks.

These giant, rainbow colored lollipops remind me of the penny candy store on Commercial Street in Provincetown on Cape Cod.

What's that? You need more candy choices? Ok!

For those who share my love of gummy candy, Economy pre-wraps bags of some of the most popular gummy shapes and flavors.

In the center of the store is an island of candy classics - Nerds, Sky Bars and more.

In the back corner of the store there are four magical machines. The Jelly Belly machine:

The M&M machine (which I thought only existed in the Times Square M&M store!):

Lastly, the sixlet and gumball machines:

If you ever needed specific colors for party favors - a birthday, a bridal shower, a wedding, a sports team themed party - Economy has you totally covered.

Right by the Jelly Belly machine I noticed this sign which had me laughing out loud:

Economy sells more than just candy. They have a collection of comic books on sale for $1 dollar.

They also have a few shelves with piggy banks that are priceless.

When you finally get into line, the counter/register area is lined with more treats! First you reach the giant bins of peanuts, banana chips and wasabi peas:

Then the chocolate and candy coated pretzels call your name:

They really know how to sucker you into last minute purchases!

If you are planning any kind of celebration involving a dessert spread, party favors or anything in a specific colors, you have got to stock up at Economy Candy.

Visit the store at 108 Rivington Street.
