Dining Out: The Taco Truck

When I signed the purchase and sale agreement for my house I immediately changed my spending habits. Knowing I would soon have mortgage payments, I changed my day to day expenditures. The first change I made was that instead of buying breakfast at Starbucks, lunch at one of the many delicious places near my office and snacks from the vending machine, I would make a weekly trip to the supermarket and bring all of my own food to work.

Well, I've been sticking to that plan since April, but late last week I found myself at work without a bag lunch. In the mood for adventure, I asked my friend over the cube wall, "Want to go on a quest for a delicious lunch?" She perked right up and said, "I've been dying go to the Taco Truck! I heard their in Government Center today."

With our goal in sight, we headed up State Street toward Government Center. We spotted the truck in an alcove next to the Staff Meal Truck and the Chubby Chickpea Truck.

The Taco Truck is bright orange. You can't miss this puppy!

The Taco Truck's motto is a simple one, "Eat more tacos." I can get on board with that!

The crew aboard the Taco Truck wear t-shirts that marry their cuisine with their Boston location. The shirts are branded with, "Wicked good tacos." Love it.

There were so many things on the Taco Truck menu we wanted to try. It was a good thing there were a handful of people in line in front of us, giving us extra time to select our top picks.

In the name of research, we ordered four dishes. We started with the platanos fritos (fried plantains) which were served with cream and sugar. The plantains were mushy and had a taste similar to banana. I would have liked if they were a bit crispier.

We decided on two kinds of tacos - the hongo (mushroom) and the aguacate tostado (fried avocado). Each type of taco can be ordered in a serving of two tacos or three tacos. Our two orders (of two tacos each) came all together in one box.

The aguacate tostado tacos were corn tortillas (two per taco) stuffed with fried avocado, black beans, sesame seeds, pickled onions and chipotle salsa.

The fried avocado was perfect. It was exactly the right amount of batter, while still maintaining the buttery taste of the avocado. The pickled onions were delicious and helped to cut the heat from the amazing chipotle salsa. I would like to have a bottle of that chipotle salsa!

The hongo (mushroom) tacos were a bit more substantial. The mushrooms were meatier than the avocado. These tacos also had great heat from the chipotle salsa. If you love mushrooms, you have to try these!

My friend had seen on Facebook that the Taco Truck was offering churros with pumpkin drizzle as a special that week. It wasn't listed anywhere on the truck, so we asked, and sure enough, they had them! The churros were dusted with cinnamon and sugar and topped with a drizzle of pumpkin sauce.

I loved the churros, but I wished the pumpkin sauce had been in a tub for dipping, as opposed to lightly sauced over the top. Half the fun of traditional churros is the dunking!

I have enjoyed meals from many of Boston's food trucks, but I have to say, the Taco Truck is one of the best. All of the ingredients are so fresh, the Mexican flavors are bold and the corn tortillas are amazing. You can taste the ground corn in every bite.

I also appreciated that even after chowing down on all four of our dishes, I didn't feel too full. The portion sizes are perfect.

Though I went for the vegetarian offerings, the Taco Truck has plenty for meat eaters. Tacos come with grilled chicken, crispy catfish, braised pork or shredded beef.

Have you been to the Taco Truck?
