Emmy Awards 2012: Best Dressed

Tonight the best of primetime TV hit the red carpet for the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. The Emmys are one of my favorite awards shows because they honor the people I look forward to watching every week, every night after work when I need a laugh or want to feel the thrill of sitting on the edge of my seat.

I also love the Emmys because it's one of the only times outside of the January - March time frame where we can openly gawk at the stars' fashion choices. Every year I look forward to sharing my picks for the best dressed and tonight I'd like to applaud five ladies who shined brighter than all the rest.

Kat Dennings in J. Mendel

I was first introduced to Kate Dennings in the little known film "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist." I loved her in that role and have been rooting for her to succeed ever since. Though I don't watch her show "2 Broke Girls," she did get my attention tonight in a cherry red J. Mendel dress. The gown hugged her every curve and she sported a bold red lip to match. Perfection.

Tina Fey in Vivienne Westwood

On this very blog I have been harping on Tina Fey's fashion choices for years. I often felt she was trying too hard and she looked like an ugly duckling playing dress up. Not tonight. Tonight Tina Fey looked the best she has ever looked on the red carpet. The amethyst colored Vivienne Westwood gown was embellished with a black and gold neckline that brought an extra glow to Fey's smiling face. "30 Rock" may be ending, but Tina, you have arrived.

Julianne Moore in Dior Couture

I have always felt that Julianne is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. Perhaps it's because red hair is tough to pull off, yet she looks like a bombshell every time. Tonight she boldly chose a mustard colored, long sleeve gown from Dior Couture. She manages to exude confidence and sex appeal without showing any skin.

Sofia Vergara in Zuhair Murad

Since Sofia Vergara exploded onto the scene as Gloria on "Modern Family" I think she has made every one of my best dressed lists. Sofia knows what flatters her curvy body and she works it. Tonight she looked like an exquisite mermaid queen. Though she lost the Emmy to her castmate Julia Bowen, to me, she's the real winner.

Julianna Margulies in Giambattista Valli

When I ask friends if they watch "The Good Wife" and they say "no," I am always surprised. I think "The Good Wife" is one of the best shows on television. On that show, Julianna Margulies plays the stoic but fierce attorney Alicia Florrick. Tonight she shed her neutral colored Alicia Florrick suits and presented an award in a stunning, floral print Giambattista Valli gown. Not only is the dress beautiful, but her hair, make up and jewels are the ideal compliment. Well played, counselor.

And there you have it!

Did you watch the show tonight? Who are your top picks for the best dressed?
