Sugar Fix: Monumental Cupcakes

Today's post is brought to you by Twitter. Let me explain.

Last week one of the cupcake bakeries I follow on Twitter, Monumental Cupcakes in Jamaica Plain, tweeted asking their followers what kind of cupcakes they should make for Father's Day. Since I was planning to be in JP on Father's Day with my dad, I thought I'd reply and see if they'd make a flavor he would love. Then this happened:

Free cupcakes? In my dad's favorite flavors? How could we resist!

Today, after a full day of furniture shopping and lunch at my dad's favorite BBQ joint, we stopped on the way home at Monumental Cupcakes.

The bakery is located right off of Centre Street in JP, on South Street.

Inside the bakery has one entire wall covered in posters of their logo. The logo makes the cupcake look like a super hero!

In both of the front windows there are black stools and cherry red, round tables where you can take a seat and enjoy your treats.

When we approached the counter I couldn't help but notice this tower of toppings! Forget a wedding cake, some day I'd like to have this instead!

When it was our turn to order I told the woman behind the counter that I had spoken to someone on Twitter about special flavors for today. She asked, "Your name?" When I told her she said, "Oh yes! We made Heath bar for your dad!" I could feel my smile growing wider. How cool is that?

Of course we ordered one Heath bar cupcake, but we also wanted to try a second flavor. After much deliberation we settled on the Belgian chocolate.

The Heath bar cupcake was a chocolate cake topped with frosting that not only had Heath bar mixed in, but raisin size pieces of Heath bar on top as well. The cake was moist and the frosting was packed with that incredible toffee flavor that comes from the Heath candy bar.

The Belgian chocolate cupcake had a yellow cake base and a generous swirl of chocolate frosting. The yellow cake was outrageously delicious and the frosting was a decadent layer of fudgey heaven. A bite of the cake and frosting together was sublime. I am pretty sure my eyes rolled into the back of my head.

I was super impressed by the Belgian chocolate cupcake and now I want to go back and try more flavors! I was intrigued by the coconut and red velvet confections I spied in the case. I will definitely be going back to test the other flavors!

Thank you to the team at Monumental Cupcakes for making the Heath bar cupcakes just for me and my dad! I hope everyone else who sampled cupcakes from that batch was equally happy.

How did you spend Father's Day?
