Dining Out: Wolfie's

On Wednesday night I met up with my college roommate and her husband to try a place that opened down the street from their apartment a few months ago called Wolfie's.

Wolfie's is on L Street in South Boston in the space formerly occupied by Kelly's. South Boston has a ton of bars - Boston Beer Garden, Playwright, Junction, Stats - but Wolfie's is a step up from those Southie staples.

When you enter Wolfie's the first area you walk through is the bar which has two huge, flat panel TVs.

The right and left walls of the restaurants have cozy booths anchored by lime green banquettes.

We took a high top table in the center of the restaurant and from our seats we had a great people watching view of L Street.

The Wolfie's menu is full of American classics. There were so many good choices that it was hard to decide.

I started the meal with a glass of Malbec, my roomie ordered a Chianti and her husband ordered a Guinness. Cheers!

To start, my roomie and her husband decided on the tomato and mozzarella salad. It was an extremely generous portion. The tomatoes were cut into thick slices and were a vibrant shade of red.

The mozzarella a top the tomatoes was fresh and creamy.

The plate was topped with a balsamic drizzle and finely chopped basil.

I started with the appetizer portion of the macaroni and cheese which was out of this world amazing. I would come back to Wolfie's again and again and again to eat this dish!

The pasta was large shells coated in the richest cheese sauce, topped with bread crumbs and baked to a bubbly perfection! Seriously, you need to eat this.

In between courses we realized all the other tables around us had bread baskets so we asked our waitress if we could also have a few slices. A few minutes later she returned with a basket full of hearty, mutligrain bread.

For dinner my roomie ordered the turkey tips with sweet potato fries and asparagus.

She said the turkey was juicy and the housemade BBQ sauce was flavorful and delicious. She lamented that the sweet potato fries were a bit limp, but assured me the asparagus was tasty and came with a nice char on the ends.

Her husband ordered the pork tips with french fries and onion strings. He also raved about the BBQ sauce and he was very happy with the thin, crispy onion rings.

I ordered the arugula salad with pears, gorgonzola cheese and pecans. It was a huge portion and dressed fantastically. This is one of the better salads I've had in a restaurant in a long time.

The food at Wolfie's was superb, but our waitress was a bit over eager. She came to the table what felt like every five minutes and she was rushing us to order, rushing us to finish and rushing us to pay the bill. The restaurant was mostly empty so I'm not sure if she being overly attentive out of boredom or because she wanted to be let go early, but I was irritated.

If you live in Southie and you haven't had the chance to try Wolfie's I highly recommend the food! I am telling you, that mac and cheese is life changing.

Have you discovered a stellar new dish recently?
