Dining Out: The Proper Slice

Ever since Naked Pizza closed its doors in Brighton Center I have been looking for a new pizza place. There is Fiorella's Express, Pizza Etc., Little Pizza King and the Brick House, but I don't really love any of them.

When I drove home a few weeks ago I noticed a new pizza place had popped up on Washington Street just two blocks from my front door. The sign read, The Proper Slice.

Last week, during the only snowy night of Boston's winter, my bestie and I headed out to give it a whirl.

Walking through the front doors of the Proper Slice transported us to "Good Will Hunting." The guys behind the counter were exactly like Matt Damon's friends in the movie. I swear I heard one of them ask, "Do you want a double burger?"

Like the other Brighton pizza joints, the Proper Slice has seating, but it's limited. There is a counter that looks out onto the street and then two sit down tables.

We grabbed two stools at the counter and started reading through the chalk board menu.

We decided to order the Caesar salad and the bacon and potato pizza (we only got bacon on one half). For those of you (and you know who you are) who say there isn't enough meat on this blog, this one's for you.

The Diet Coke I ordered came with red Solo cups. Really guys? This isn't a frat house.

The Caesar salad that got delivered to us was less appealing than the bags of Caesar salad you can buy at the grocery store. It was disgusting.

Our pizza pie arrived and I was hoping for improvement. The bacon and potato pizza has sharp cheddar cheese, garlic oil, scallions and sour cream.

I must admit, I was impressed by the drizzle of sour cream across the top of the pie.

Though the flavor of the pizza was good and the crust had a great crunch, the pizza was so oily that is soaked right through my paper plate.

We didn't even make it half way through the pie so we asked for a box to take it home. Though the food at the Proper Slice was proving to be improper, their branding is super sharp. Check out the logo on the box:

For those who like something sweet after dinner, the Proper Slice apparently has fried dough.

I wanted to love the Proper Slice, especially because it's just two blocks from my front door, but the quality of the food was poor. The guys that run the place are quintessential Boston and very polite and accommodating, but it's not enough to overcome the sub-par grub.

The quest for the perfect Brighton pizza place continues . . .
