Dining Out: Olga's Cup + Saucer

Saturday morning of Labor Day weekend my Manhattan visitor and I hopped in the car and headed down 95 to visit one of our favorites in Providence, RI. During my four years at Wheaton College I visited Providence countless times, but always to the same four spots: the Providence Place Mall, Water Fire, Federal Hill and Thayer Street. I was looking forward to a local's tour of the city.

To kick off our visit, our tour guide took us to Olga's Cup + Saucer for brunch. As we walked toward the cafe my lips turned upward in a smile when I saw the beautiful landscaping. The cafe's outdoor patio is lined with brightly colored blooms.

The patio is large but feels like a secret garden. There was a true whimsy to the space and I couldn't wait to sit down and enjoy it.

Every touch in the garden is thoughtful, including these table tops which mimic tree and plant patterns.

The hostess stand employs one of my favorite design elements - chalkboards!

We were seated right away and our table was decorated with a vase of fresh flowers.

We started our brunch off with three glasses of ice tea. They were perfectly refreshing.

As we looked over the menu, our local touchstone told us Olga's makes all their own bread and pastries. Naturally we wanted to taste as many as we could!

After placing our order we waited forty five minutes for our food to arrive. I understand that the place was packed, but that is just entirely too long. We could have come and gone by then! When our food finally did arrive, we were ravenous.

I ordered the chipotle cheddar vegetable melt which came grilled on sourdough bread. The sandwich arrived garnished with Cape Cod potato chips and a pickle spear. The bread was indeed delish, but the sandwich had way too much spinach which so salty not even the cheddar cheese or the chipotle mayo could cut through it.

My Manhattan friend order the buckwheat crepes which came stuffed with spinach and mushrooms and was topped with a fried egg. It comes smothered in Hollandaise sauce, but she asked to have it without. I took a bite of the crepe and again, the spinach made it way too salty. The Hollandaise might have balanced that out, but we'll never know.

Our local ordered the poached eggs on a grilled, cheddar and scallion scone. It came with home fries (both regular and sweet potatoes) and bacon. The scone was fantastic and when you took a bite soaked with the poached egg - mmmmmm! This was the winning dish for sure.

After our plates were cleared, our waitress delivered us a saucer with two treats as an apology for our meals taking so long to arrive. Wasn't that nice!

In addition, when our check arrived, she removed our drinks. I greatly appreciated that she acknowledged our long wait time on the bill. Very good customer service.

Before leaving the cafe, I went inside to use the ladies room. On my way there I stopped at the counter and took note of all the incredible pastries!

I love these heart shaped macaroons and these tortes dusted with cocoa hearts. Too cute!

If you're visiting Providence, absolutely make Olga's Cup + Saucer a stop on your tour!
